In this ongoing science class, learners will master the essential process of experimental design through engaging weekly hands-on investigations. Each session kicks off with a thought-provoking guiding question, prompting students to formulate a hypothesis and identify control, independent, and dependent variables. Students will conduct experiments using common household materials, gaining practical experience in the scientific method. Under the teacher's guidance, they will analyze and communicate their results, drawing insightful scientific conclusions based on their findings. To enhance their learning experience, students are encouraged to maintain a journal or notebook for recording observations and reflections. Week 1: The "O" Wing : Does the size of the wing on an O Wing plane affect the distance it flies? Week 2 The M & M Lab : Does the temperature of the water affect the time it takes for the candy to dissolve? Week 3: Move It! Does the mass of an object affect the amount of force needed to move it? Week 4 Swinging: the length of a pendulum affect the number of times it swings in one minute? Week 5: Blast Off! Does the length of a catapult affect how far an object will move when launched? Week 6 Balloon Races: Does the amount of air in a balloon affect the distance it flies? Week 7 Marble Run: Does the number of marbles hit affect the number that rolls away? Week 8: Weight Lifter: Does the length of the support beam affect the amount of effort needed to lift a load? After week 8, the class cycle will begin again with week 1.
学習到達目標
Students will learn how to conduct valid experiments with controlled variables and accurate measurement. They will learn how to analyze their results and make scientific conclusions.

Students will interact in class through the NearPod platform as the main presentation tool. Check for Understanding games will be played on Kahoot, Gimkit, and Quizzlet. Some pre-screened You Tube videos will be included for content as well as unlisted YouTube videos created by the teacher. None of these resources require students to create log ins or accounts and they will be presented live through the NearPod platform.

I have been sharing my love of science and math and STEM with elementary students in public schools for over 28 years. I served most of that time in the classroom and then moved into Instructional Coaching to help other teachers improve their practice in those areas. I have a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction.
Classes with Ms. Susan are fun, engaging, and hands on, with an inquiry approach in everything we do. My goal is to latch on to the natural curiosity children have about the world around them and use that to explore science, engineering, and math concepts in a rich and meaningful way. I believe in teaching in ways that children learn, using strategies and activities that foster a love of learning. As a retired teacher, I am not bound by district or state policies and I am able to use fun, creative lessons to instill the academics that children need to master, not the ones they need to pass state assessments.
One of my favorite quotes from Carl Sagan sums up my approach to science education - "Science is a way of thinking much more than it is a body of knowledge." In Ms. Susan's Super Science and Math classes, students will be challenged to think!
