In this high school reading comprehension class, students (ages 14-18) will refine their reading, annotating, and writing skills through a range of texts. Each week, students will engage with various pieces of writing, practicing annotation techniques to deepen their understanding, improving their comprehension, and participating in thought-provoking discussions that will enhance their critical thinking and analytical skills. Through targeted activities, students will learn to respond to both plot-based and higher-order thinking questions with detailed, well-structured answers.

**This class follows a consistent format each week, so students can join at any time without feeling lost. Each session begins with an overview of the text, followed by reading, annotating, and discussion.**

What will be taught:

Students will focus on enhancing their reading comprehension and annotation skills through challenging texts, including both fiction and non-fiction works. The class will delve into key literary elements such as themes, character development, setting, plot structure, and argumentation techniques in non-fiction. Students will practice answering both comprehension questions and higher-order thinking questions, developing written responses that showcase advanced writing skills and analytical depth.

Class structure:

-In this class, students will strengthen their reading comprehension and writing skills through a variety of engaging fiction and nonfiction texts.
-Each class begins with a brief review of a key skill, such as analyzing literary elements, making inferences, or improving writing techniques.
-We’ll then read and annotate a selected text, whether it’s a short story, article, or essay, identifying key themes, ideas, and techniques.
-After the reading, students will write short answer responses to questions or a paragraph that connects the text to the skill we’ve focused on.
-Throughout the class, students will actively engage with the material, participate in discussions, and receive real-time feedback to enhance their understanding.
-By the end of each session, students will build confidence in their ability to analyze both fiction and nonfiction texts while improving their writing and critical thinking skills.

Teaching style:

My teaching style is interactive, structured, and student-centered. I provide clear, direct instructions and foster a positive, inclusive classroom atmosphere where all students feel comfortable sharing their ideas. I aim to make the class dynamic by involving students in real-time participation, questions, and thoughtful discussions.

Teacher interaction:

-Discussion: Students will engage in class discussions about the text’s themes, characters, arguments, and plot, offering analysis and insights.
-Google Docs: Students will annotate directly in the text and respond to questions in real time.
-Individualized feedback: I offer real-time, personalized feedback on students’ annotations and responses to ensure continuous improvement.
-Q&A: Students can ask questions throughout the session, and I will provide tailored support to ensure clarity and understanding.

By the end of each class, students will have strengthened their reading comprehension, enhanced their annotating techniques, and learned how to write well-organized, in-depth responses to complex comprehension and analysis questions.

学習到達目標

Students will learn how to analyze key themes, characters, and literary techniques in both fiction and nonfiction texts.
Students will develop the ability to make inferences and draw connections between the text and broader ideas or real-world contexts.
