Students may write their creations freehand or type them out. At the end of class, students are invited (but not required) to share their story aloud with their classmates. This class is taught not just by published authors, but also experienced game masters. Each creation will conform to the current D&D 5E ruleset, making it playable and shareable, both on and offline. Examples of our prompts: ⚔️ Task: Make a new, playable insect race based on centipedes! Together, the class will investigate interesting real-life facts about centipedes—their lifecycle, their prey, their coloration and more, then integrate those facts with their own imaginations, to create a playable Centipede race for D&D. 🐉 Task: Create a personal artifact based on their favorite possession! Dungeons & Dragons gives players the chance to create a bigger, better, more exciting version of themselves. And that means sometimes, their Orc Barbarian Warrior might also love collecting locking blocks. Perhaps that mysterious Tiefling Rogue carries a patch of purple fabric that once belonged to their favorite blanket. With this task, students will transform their favorite things into mighty artifacts that may turn the tide of battle! 🧙🏻♂️ Task: Create monster disguised as a treasure hoard! Using real-life examples of extreme camouflage in the wild as a template, students will create a sneaky creature their treasure-hungry players can’t resist! They’ll be able to model their monster after real-life animals like the Leafy Sea Dragon, the Potoo bird, Dresser Crabs, Walking Sticks and more. Note: We will NOT be playing a Dungeons & Dragons campaign in this class!

D&D is a fantasy-adventure roleplaying game that can, at times, have violent elements. While no particularly graphic elements will be described in detail, they may be mentioned in passing as we discuss campaign strategies. We strictly do not allow or discuss sexual assault being used as a campaign element.
Below are my general classroom rules and policies. These will also be explained to students when we begin class!
-For everyone's safety, and to ensure an engaging and social experience, students are required to have working microphones and video for the entirety of this class, positioned such that we can both hear and see them. Please be sure to prepare your student for this requirement before class begins!
-Students are asked not to use filters or virtual backgrounds-- though if there is an important reason to use a virtual background, please just let me know ahead of time that your student will be using one (no questions asked!).
-Students will be asked to introduce themselves by sharing their name, pronoun, and a favorite book.
-The Zoom text chat is set to "host only", meaning students can chat with me, but not to one another or the entire classroom.
