As with anything, skills can only improve with application. Use a dictionary, find new words, do as much as you are willing to on your own! I am here to supply the tools for this.

このクラスで学べること

In this class, students will expand their vocabulary and reading skills through a look at Greek and Latin root words in the English language. Parts of words, in addition to root words, will include prefixes and suffixes and examine how these parts come together to impart meaning. The number of words covered will depend on how many students are in class on a given day, but the minimum covered should be 3-4 new words.

Students will be given words orally, and an attempt at spelling will be made. Spelling corrections will be made as necessary. Then we will move into definitions. What idea does this word express? Also, does the student know of any other words that sound familiar? Students will then be given time to form sentences using the new words. Wordsmithing, or the creating of new words, will discussed as we build our repertoire.

Each day we will begin with a KWL chart to ascertain familiarity with word roots, and new words will be logged in a running vocabulary list to verify correct spelling and definition. There will also be a spoken portion in which we will discuss the new vocabulary. If there is time at the end of class, student may practice wordsmithing: learning to form new words from known prefixes, suffixes, and roots.

A weekly breakdown may look like this:
Week of August 8: Root word "struct" with common prefixes and suffixes and how they create meaning.

Week of August 15: Root words "tract" and "vinc/vince" with common prefixes and suffixes and how they create meaning.

Week of August 22: Root words "mob/mot/mote/mov" with common prefixes and suffixes and how they create meaning.

Week of August 29: Root words "brev" and "cede/ceed/cess" with common prefixes and suffixes and how they create meaning.

Greetings and salutations! I am Mr. Hodge, and I come from a very varied background! I am an English teacher by trade, and a History buff by nature. I am skilled with a book, hammer, and soil. I know about health and nutrition, and I dabble in the culinary arts. I have taught English, Math, Science, PE, and Health classes in the past professionally, and I am capable of teaching Automotive, Gardening, and Cattle. I am also working on an ESL certification. I might be able to teach basic German, but my tutoring on this is very limited. In other words: I have much to offer!

To quote Mark Twain: "I will never let school get in the way of my education." To me, this sets a philosophical difference between what is school, and what is education. I am passionate about educating, so education is what I offer! What can you learn, and from where? I am an avid reader, but also a very handy doer! I find one can learn from and episode of Futurama just as much as one can learn from Shakespeare (if you know where to look, and what to look for). What are you passionate about? It's never too late to learn something new!

A fun fact about me: I have been working with cattle for the past 5 years after being involved in Education for 8. It is never too late to learn a new skill!

*Feel free to contact me about scheduling classes you're interested in but I have no time periods listed.*
