We will interact and discuss as we read Tuesdays With Morrie by Mitch Albom. This is a memoir, a glimpse into the close relationship between professor and student. The respect and admiration as a student leads him to spend more time with his professor. Over time, he realizes his professor also hold him in respect and admiration, and they share a special bond that endures over several decades. At the end of his life, the professor shares some profound life lessons with his student. ~~~~~ From Amazon description: "Maybe it was a grandparent, or a teacher, or a colleague. Someone older, patient and wise, who understood you when you were young and searching, helped you see the world as a more profound place, gave you sound advice to help you make your way through it. For Mitch Albom, that person was Morrie Schwartz, his college professor from nearly twenty years ago. Maybe, like Mitch, you lost track of this mentor as you made your way, and the insights faded, and the world seemed colder. Wouldn’t you like to see that person again, ask the bigger questions that still haunt you, receive wisdom for your busy life today the way you once did when you were younger? Mitch Albom had that second chance. He rediscovered Morrie in the last months of the older man’s life. Knowing he was dying, Morrie visited with Mitch in his study every Tuesday, just as they used to back in college. Their rekindled relationship turned into one final “class”: lessons in how to live. Tuesdays with Morrie is a magical chronicle of their time together, through which Mitch shares Morrie’s lasting gift with the world." ~~~~~~ We will read aloud together and discuss the people, events, stories, and lessons of this wisdom-rich book. We will meet twice weekly, for six weeks, reading approximately 20 pages each class. Here is a tentative schedule: Week 1 pp. 1-20 and 21-40 Week 2 pp. 41-60 and 61-80 Week 3 pp. 81-100 and 101-120 Week 4 pp 121-140 and 141-160 Week 5 pp 161-180 and 181-192 Week 6 author's note/discuss end of book/ reflect on life lessons presented and share end-of-book writings Questions to think about as we read/to help develop end-of-book writings: *What would you do in this situation? *Do you agree or disagree with Morrie? Why? *Have you had a situation like this in your life? *Make a connection to another story, book or movie you've seen. *Translate the life lesson into your own words. *How could this be true/realized in your own life? *Given the situation, would you react the same way? *What words of wisdom do you have to offer?

This text approaches subjects such as death, dying, rebirth, reincarnation, existentialism. We will not endorse these as philosophy, but work to understand the thinking behind such concepts. Addressing these subjects also helps one to establish one's own beliefs about life and death, but the teacher will remain objective and not endorse any one way of thinking. Students are left to decide for themselves. Some life lessons we will pursue include love, loss, forgiveness, acceptance, and making a difference.

Hello! My name is Teacher Kathy, and I look forward to seeing you in my classroom! I teach students of all ages to become better readers and writers through integrated, interactive, and hands-on learning. I enjoy incorporating art and music into learning, and aim to reach all styles of learners: audio, visual, and kinesthetic.
My goal for each class is for students to walk away with useful, real skills in reading, writing, and vocabulary that will benefit them in whatever their own personal goals may be. Communication skills are essential in whatever successful pursuits a person may have, and my aim is to provide personalized, friendly, and fun help in becoming a better communicator: on paper, in person, online, conversationally, and (eventually) professionally.
I have been a middle school language arts and social studies teacher (15 years), and I taught life skills (3 years), introductory Spanish (2 years) and elementary art (1 year). I have been a high school English teacher in Literature, Grammar, and Practical English. I have also taught English as a Second Language online for the past 4 years. I have my Masters in Education and Curriculum from UMC.
When I'm not teaching, I enjoy reading, writing, cooking, sewing, crafts, camping and all things cats. As a writer, I have always kept journals, notes, lists, and written down my dreams in the middle of the night, in hopes of one day publishing a book (which has finally come to be a reality in 2021!) I like to spend time with my husband and six “kid-ties,” and enjoy traveling and learning about new parts of the world.
