If you've ever looked at a vocabulary list and thought, "Too easy!" this class is for you. Over 55 minutes, we will learn and practice 10 puzzling, impressive, and extremely useful vocabulary words that you could very well slip into your college entrance essays... or just use to perplex your friends!

Similar to sessions of my regular Vocabulary Workshop, the first part of class will be a presentation and discussion of the 10 words. Students are encouraged to attempt pronunciation and to reason through the meaning based on images before seeing the actual definition. Then, students and the instructor will discuss the word, its part of speech, and its narrow and wide implications/applications. Who might use such a word, and in what circumstances?

The second part of class involves students testing their familiarity with the word. When the instructor shows the definition on screen, students are expected to type the correct word into chat. Following that, we will list synonyms and antonyms as well as discuss the etymology of the word. Also, students will have the opportunity, for each word, to fashion their own sentence.

Students will have time to create their own sentences based on an image and to compose short writings that use the words. Finally, students will view a text that uses weak words, and they must determine which vocabulary words should replace them.

After class, students will have access to a quizlet (online flashcards) and a Nearpod activity that includes matching words with definitions, a fill-in-the-blank story, and an activity that requires them to understand whether the word is used correctly in a sentence.

The Set 1 word list is: jejune, emollient, anathema, espouse, grandiloquence, inchoate, pulchritude, avuncular, vicissitude, and bugbear.

For more than three years, I have connected with Outschool learners through literature, poetry, writing, and vocabulary. My weekly vocabulary sessions have been immensely popular. However, I often encounter older students who want a true challenge. Thus was born this class!

Underpinning this passion for writing is a strong writing background. For years I worked as a professional journalist for newspapers, magazines, and various freelance and online publications. I also hold dual degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Journalism and French literature.
