It's finally here! We know about the Mona Lisa and how its theft brought it into the spotlight of fame. The Scream and how its theft in the 1990s inspired an iconic horror character and the cover of Home Alone. Or maybe you don't and that's ok. In the history of art, there are records of many thefts beginning in the Renisance. Pieces going missing as they are moved from one city to another. But in recent history, there have been more, better-documented thefts. In this class, we'll learn about some of the best-known art crimes in history. Who? How? What? and possibly why? Through a combination of lecture and discussion, we'll see the art, learn what happened, and theorize why someone would steal it. Some are shocking, other humorous, but all are a crime. This course covers the thefts of the Mona Lisa and Scream. The Yarnwinder Madonna, Hans Memling's Last Judgement; as well as the armed robbery of Sweden's National Museum, the Musee d'Art Modern in Paris, Buhrle Artnapping, The Whitworth Art Gallery Heist, and of course the Isabella Steward Gardner theft.

This class does show a work of art with nudity it is the Christ child. This painting will be on screen for aproximently 1 minute and the focus will be on its theft. Please see the Yarnwinder Madonna attributed to Leonardo da Vinci to determine if this will affect your student.

I teach art history to college students in my other life. I have experience with art history from prehistoric to modern and did a bit of research into these thefts and art crime. I have also worked with province investigators for some top law firms in the country. These are the people the rich call before they buy at auctions and who auction houses and museums call before they sell or buy. Many think of the Nazi's when thinking about looted art but looted art extends far beyond Europe. No one wants to be accused of buying stollen art so they have research teams to help find out the history of art. レビュー
