My excitement about American symbols and American history began with my travels to Washington, DC. I loved stepping onto the exact spot Martin Luther King Jr. stood for his I Have a Dream speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Walking through the White House thrilled me as I imagined the historic individuals who had walked its halls. I have enthusiastically taught many students about Washington, DC through books, music, and plays, and I am excited to teach biographies of iconic Americans.

This will be a non-partisan class, with the understanding that Ruth Bader Ginsburg is known for her groundbreaking work for gender equality and that she was appointed to judgeships by presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton. Due to the nature of her work, there will be photos that include political figures and discussion about her cases regarding gender equality.
