Through PowerPoint slides, we will explore the life and legacy of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg beginning with her childhood days and extending through her college life, marriage, motherhood, law school, work history, and eventual appointment to the Supreme Court of the United States. I will also show photos of the U.S. Supreme Court Building. Following the PowerPoint slide show, learners will create a step-by-step drawing of Ruth Bader Ginsburg. They will have the optional opportunity to share their drawings with the rest of the class. If there is extra time, we will do a second art project (the Supreme Court Building).

My main resource for this class is the autobiographical book In My Own Words by Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Other resources include RBG directed and produced by Betsy West and Julie Cohen, Ruth: Justice Ginsburg in Her Own Words directed by Freida Lee Mock & screenwriters Frieda Lee Mock and M.A. Golan, On the Basis of Sex directed by Mimi Leder & screenwriter Daniel Stiepleman, and the Supreme Court of the United States website. This will be a non-partisan class, with the understanding that Ruth Bader Ginsburg is known for her groundbreaking work for gender equality and that she was appointed to judgeships by presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton. Due to the nature of her work, there will be photos that include political figures. While discussing her cases regarding gender equality, I will include the fact that some people questioned whether new precedents regarding gender equality were necessary.

My excitement about American symbols and American history began with my travels to Washington, DC. I loved stepping onto the exact spot Martin Luther King Jr. stood for his I Have a Dream speech on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. Walking through the White House thrilled me as I imagined the historic individuals who had walked its halls. I have enthusiastically taught many students about Washington, DC through books, music, and plays, and I am excited to teach biographies of iconic Americans.
