In this exciting course learners will use chemical reactions and the scientific method to predict how much a balloon will inflate on its own. Will it burst? Let's find out! Learners can use the optional material list if the wish to complete the experiment with me. Students will learn the basics of matter and how they interact to make different matter (e.g. chemical reactions). We will use the scientific method to predict, record, conclude, and suggest improvements on our experiment....
Students learn the methods of prediction, testing, recording results, and improvement. Students will be able to use hands-on activity using everyday items to create a fun and exciting experiment.
I am a middle school and high school math and science teacher with eight years of experience. Additionally, I am a homeschooling dad of 12+years who has four kids that are four different types of learners. I have the privilege to teach many subject areas, but chemistry is my favorite as it applies to all other areas of science. My opinion is that if a student understands major chemical concepts, other sciences become more clear. I hold a MS and BS in the natural sciences.
Four- Balloons (latex or non latex - parent discretion), Four - 0.5 or 1-liter empty, clean, small-mouth bottles (e.g. water or soda), baking soda, distilled/or white vinegar (works best), funnel, measuring spoons (1tsp/5ml), and towels (for clean up).

If the students desire to complete this along with me, parental supervision is strongly suggested. All supplies are safe and common household items, however, the sequence of events are important for experiment's success. Students and parents are advised that common latex balloons may cause sensitivity or allergy in some students or individual. If this is the case latex free balloon should be sought after.
I am enthusiastic about helping students become life long learners! My favorite question from students is: "what would happen if?" Kids are naturally curious and my goal is to fuel curiosity via discussion and investigation with students. One...
