The Life and times of Martin Luther King, Jr are not like the life you live today. As a matter-of-fact your life today was directly impacted by the life and work of Martin Luther King, Jr. In this class, we will learn an overview of how people lived before and during the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. We will discuss segregation in schools and the difference between black and white schools. Students will learn how segregation affected all aspects of life. Students will learn how segregation was different in the North than in the South. Students will learn what the government said about segregation and how the Supreme Court treated segregation. Students will learn about the Civil Rights Movement, the Montgomery bus boycott, sit-ins and other protests. They will learn about the Freedom Rides and find out how children were involved in fighting segregation and fighting for civil rights. We will discuss the original March on Washington and the Freedom Summer. We will find out what happened to the Civil Rights Movement after Martin Luther King, Jr was killed and if there is still a fight for Civil Rights today.

Any materials for the class will be provided by the teacher. At the end of the class each student will receive a certificate showing they completed a Time Travelers Class. Grades are provided by the teacher but only when requested for by the parent. To receive a grade the student will need to complete a small assignment or worksheet provided by the teacher and a short quiz on the subject being studied. If at all possible please let the teacher know a few days in advance that your child will need a grade.

I hold a BA in History with minors in Women Studies and Humanities as well as an MA in History. My area of specialty is women's history and American (United States) history from the 1560s to 1960s. I strive to continue my education by taking continuing education courses on many topics pertaining to the settling of the United States. I have recently completed continuing education units studying in-depth the civil rights movement and the men and women who dedicated their lives to the movement.
