In this 6-week book club, we’ll explore The Giver through guided discussions, interactive activities, and analysis of key themes. Each week, learners will come prepared having read the assigned chapters, and we’ll engage in conversations about the story, characters, and deeper messages.

What to Expect:

✅ Weekly Book Discussions – Analyze character development, symbolism, and major themes.

Introduction & Chapter 1 - 4

 We'll discuss what we've learned so far about The Community and the characters in The Giver. Discussing the setting and characters to see if we can make predictions of what will come next. Learners will need to have read chapters 1 - 4 before our first class.

Review of Chapters 5 - 8

 We'll discuss the Ceremony of Twelve and it's signifigance for the members of the community. We'll discuss Jonas's assignemnt and it's implications. Learners will read chapters 5 - 8 before class.

Review and Discussion of Chapters 9 - 13

 Learners will be able to discuss Joans' first experience with memory. We'll also discuss the importance of emotions and choice, and begin to guess at why the founders of the Community removed them for Sameness. Learners will need to read chapters 9 - 13 before class.

Discuss and Review Chapters 14 - 17

 This week we'll discuss pain and loss, and what it would be like to experience that for the first time at age 12 or 13! We'll discuss how Jonas' relationships with friends and family are changing as he learns more and more through his training. Learners will read chapters 14 - 17 before class.

💡 As a former special education teacher, I support diverse learners, including those with reading challenges. Discussions are accessible to all, with optional supplemental materials for extra support.

This book is equivalent to 12+, or PG. Common Sense Media rates it for 11+. We will also utilize MagicSchoolai which is an online AI platform made for learners. I create a private 'classroom' for us to use, and I explain how to utilize it before use. It adheres to all student privacy regulations.

📖 Learners should be able to read independently or use guided worksheets for support. No prior experience is needed—just a willingness to engage in discussion!

The Giver should be available from your local library. Students can use a physical copy of the book or an online copy through Libby.

Every learner deserves a reading experience that goes beyond just decoding words on a page. In this class, I create an engaging and supportive space where students not only improve their reading comprehension but also develop critical thinking skills and a deeper appreciation for literature.

With extensive experience as a Special Education teacher, I specialize in helping students with mild to moderate learning disabilities build confidence in reading. My background in teaching ELA and reading, combined with a master’s degree focused on teaching struggling readers, allows me to use proven strategies that support diverse learners.

In this class, students will:
✔ Develop analytical skills by exploring characters, themes, and symbolism
✔ Strengthen their ability to express ideas through structured discussions
✔ Gain confidence in reading by making meaningful connections to the text
✔ Engage in a learning environment designed to foster curiosity and enjoyment

My goal is to make literature accessible, enjoyable, and thought-provoking for every student, helping them grow into confident, thoughtful readers.
