What is Ekphrastic Poetry?

Imagine a painting, a sculpture, or a photograph that speaks to you. Ekphrastic poetry is like having a conversation with that artwork! It's the art of using words to describe, interpret, and respond to a piece of visual art. 

We'll learn how to use our imaginations to:

-Describe what we see in the artwork: its colors, shapes, textures, the way it makes us feel.
-Imagine the story behind the artwork: Who created it? What were they thinking? What emotions are they trying to convey?
-Connect the artwork to our own experiences and feelings.
-Create a new piece of art with words, inspired by the visual artwork we've explored.

The Ekphrastic Social Club is more than just a poetry class. It's a chance to:

-Develop your art appreciation skills: We'll learn to look closely at art, analyze its elements, and understand how artists use color, shape, and form to convey meaning.
-Connect with other young poets: Share your ideas, listen to different perspectives, and build friendships with fellow art and poetry enthusiasts.
-Build your confidence: Express your unique voice and interpretations through your writing, and receive positive feedback from your peers.

What to Expect Each Week:

In each 25-minute session, we'll dive into a new piece of art and let our imaginations soar! Here's what you can expect:

Quick Art Look (5 minutes): We'll start with a brief but focused observation of the artwork, highlighting key details and sharing initial impressions.
Ekphrastic Spark (7 minutes): We'll brainstorm ideas and discuss what the artwork makes us think and feel, focusing on a few key elements.
Poem Start (8 minutes): We'll begin writing our own ekphrastic poems, with guidance and support to get everyone started.
Poem Share (5 minutes): We'll have a chance to share our poems (or parts of them) and offer positive feedback to each other.
