💬 Learn Real Spanish Through Storytelling!
This is not your average Spanish class. It’s an online Spanish book club for teens, designed for beginners who want to explore the language through immersive, story-based learning.

📍 Set in Mexico City, this class follows a bilingual teen navigating family drama, identity, and mysterious powers—all while introducing real Spanish in context. The author-teacher lives in Mexico City and brings her experience to life through vocabulary, culture, and storytelling.

🗣️ This class is for Spanish beginners!
Instruction is mainly in English, with Spanish introduced through reading, guided conversation, and key vocabulary.

---

🧠 What to Expect Each Week:

📖 A bilingual chapter (mostly English with 10% beginner-level Spanish)
📝 A vocabulary list with real-world phrases & beginner slang
💡 A comprehension activity to reinforce new words
✍️ A writing prompt to build language confidence
🎥 A cultural spotlight (Zócalo, Templo Mayor, etc.)
📺 Links to real video footage filmed in Mexico City
🎭 Optional speaking & creative character-based activities

---

💥 Why it works:
Students absorb Spanish in context, the same way we learn our first language—through emotion, story, and connection. It’s perfect for middle and high school learners at an A1–A2 level who want to learn real Spanish, not just memorize it.

📘 Part story.
🌎 Part cultural journey.
🎓 All real-world Spanish.

THE STORY, PULSE: BEHIND THE STORM This class includes a workbook/novel as part of the curriculum. The story is original and written by one of the teachers at Chatterbox Academy, Señora Sarah. While the story is entirely classroom appropriate, it is written for preteens and teens. The emotions and themes explored in this story may not be a good fit for students under 10. Here are some of the themes and topics you should know about as a parent, before choosing this class: -teenage romance -a kiss or two shared between teen characters -wrestling with confusing romantic feelings as a teen -tough family dynamics like divorce and single parenting -teen angst, arguing with a parent, and sometimes rebellion -unfamiliar superpowers and how the teen characters struggle to master them 🚨MESSAGE US to receive a downloadable parent guide with detailed information on the story's content. OR 📱🔎SCAN THE QR CODE in the class trailer video, above, to automatically download the first sample chapter of Pulse: Behind the Storm, with the Parent Guide included. BLOOKET, GIMKIT, and CONJUGUEMOS We often like to use websites called BLOOKET, GIMKIT, and CONJUGUEMOS to play review games with students. We create the games and provide a link to them directly in the Zoom chat box during our live class. Students do not need a Blooket, Gimkit, or Conjuguemos account to participate. If they have their own account, they may use it. ************ KAHOOT We may use Kahoot in this class, or we may not. Kahoot is a website where teachers design quiz games for students to test their knowledge and review what they have learned. If we use Kahoot in class, we will provide students with the necessary link and Game PIN to access the Kahoot game. We will also include this information in the virtual classroom for students who wish to play the Kahoot game at a later time. STUDENTS DO NOT NEED A KAHOOT ACCOUNT TO USE THIS FEATURE. ********* CANVA We may need to use Canva to present class material in the event that the NEARPOD website is down. This would be a rare event and only in an emergency. Please note that students do not need a Canva account for us to use this feature. Students will not need to log into Canva. If we use Canva to present the lesson, this will only be via screen share. ********************** YOUTUBE Occasionally, our classes include a very brief YouTube video. This is only in a class or two, but it adds to the class experience when we choose to use it. YouTube videos that we use are very short, usually under two minutes long. Students do not need a YouTube account and they do not need to sign into YouTube for us to use this feature in class. We will simply share a video embedded into the Nearpod material sourced from YouTube. This will be used only on the screen share, and students do not need to sign into YouTube to use this feature. **** QUIZLET We often use Quizlet to help students review vocabulary learned in class. Quizlet is a website with electronic flashcards and games to help students review. Students do not need a Quizlet account to use this feature. We will provide specific links to Quizlets that we create for students to use in the virtual classroom. ******** ZOOM LINKS Please note that we cannot provide Zoom links for students to enter the session. Outschool does not allow this. ***************************** TECHNOLOGY NOTE Children should be able to handle technological functions like accessing the Zoom chat box, turning on or off their microphone on Zoom, clicking a link to open the Nearpod website, navigating to the Nearpod website, and opening a new tab on their internet browser to see the Nearpod website. They should be able to click answers to questions on their screens. It would also be good for them to know how to navigate between Zoom and an external website, since they will need to do this during class to participate in the Nearpod games. **************************** PARENTS EMAILING OR MESSAGING THE TEACHER DURING CLASS Please note that we may not receive messages if parents email or message us during a live class. For example, if a child is unable to enter Zoom due to a technical issue and a parent messages us during a live group class, we may not be able to check messages or respond right away. Our attention is naturally focused on the students in the classroom at that time, and we are not closely monitoring our email or messages. We try our best to check on messages if a student has not joined us, but we cannot always check immediately. **************************** SKILLS REQUIRED Students need to be able to read to participate in this class. *************************** BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS Students are expected to raise their hands to share their thoughts or ask/answer questions. Interruptions will be handled with patience, but we may need to mute a student who constantly interrupts the teacher or fellow classmates. We do not like to mute students because we want to encourage free and frequent participation, but on rare occasions, it is necessary to preserve the class flow and environment. Profanity will not be tolerated. This is extremely rare, but any student using profanity will be immediately muted. *************************** POLICY REGARDING CLASS RUNNING OVERTIME Rarely, class may run overtime by a minute or two. If a child needs to leave right on time, and for some reason, we have not wrapped up, they may leave immediately without asking permission. We understand that students have other classes, obligations, and activities. ************************* POLICY REGARDING EATING AND RESTROOM BREAKS Please let children know that they do not need to ask for permission to go to the restroom. They may just get up and go when they need to. We are perfectly fine with kids eating or drinking in class, as long as they are able to swallow their food before speaking to the class and turn off their microphone while chewing. ************************* PARTICIPATION POLICY Our classes are student-centered, meaning that we try to let kids participate and speak as much as possible during class. This gives them more opportunities to use Spanish and get involved in the lesson. Students who come to our class are expected to participate frequently. If a student is shy, don't worry; everyone is welcome to participate in the chat box rather than speaking aloud. Speaking aloud is preferred but not mandatory. We understand that every student is different. *********************** CAMERA POLICY Please note that children are NOT required to keep their cameras on during class. They are, however, required to turn their cameras on for a split second at the beginning of class so we can verify that they are children. This is an Outschool safety policy. The exception to this rule is verified learners. Please make sure that your child has a working camera so we can verify who they are. If we cannot see them at all and they are not verified learners, we are required to remove them from the classroom, even if we recognize their voice. ********************* STUDENT NAME POLICY Please make sure children understand that their name is important when they sign in to the classroom. For their safety, their name must match exactly what it is on their Outschool profile OR it can match their parent’s name on their Outschool profile. We are not allowed to admit students with other names into the Zoom classroom. ******************** REFUND POLICY Each class type on Outschool has different refund policies. Refunds are generally given for emergencies, student illness, death in the family, funerals, and other special circumstances at our discretion. Refunds are generally not given for last-minute family vacations, student technical issues, or missed classes without prior notice. Each situation will be handled on a case-by-case basis. ************************ STUDENT NO-SHOW POLICY If a student does not show up to class, with no communication from the family, for ten minutes after the class start time, we may exit the Zoom classroom and end the class. No refund is provided in this situation. We will leave a brief comment in the virtual classroom explaining that we are no longer on Zoom to advise the family. ************************* CLASS RESCHEDULING POLICY If we are at fault for class not taking place on time, we will offer to reschedule the lesson at no charge to the family. If the student is at fault due to technical issues, vacation, emergencies, etc., we may offer to reschedule the lesson on a case-by-case basis.
受講に必要なもの
Learners will need to print out the PULSE: BEFORE THE STORM Spanish curriculum workbook.

Eventually this workbook will also be available for purchase online, but this is not necessary. The teacher will send each chapter in the classroom each week.

Learners must also have a working webcam.

It is preferred, but not required, that learners have a headset or set of earbuds with microphone, to reduce background noise.
