Writers Have a Purpose
In our first class, students will learn what real writers do and how they write with a purpose—whether to entertain, inform, or express an opinion. We’ll explore mentor texts that show examples of different kinds of writing and then brainstorm our own ideas. Students will draw themselves as writers and write a sentence or two explaining what kind of writing they enjoy most. We’ll also play an interactive game called “What Kind of Writer Am I?” where students guess the purpose behind different ex

Sentence Power: From Boring to Brilliant
Students will strengthen their sentence writing by learning how to turn short, simple sentences into more detailed, interesting ones. We’ll review what makes a sentence complete, then model how to add descriptive words and combine ideas. After playing a fun sentence expansion game together, students will take basic sentences like “The dog ran” and turn them into “The big brown dog ran quickly to the park.” We’ll wrap up with a quick quiz-style game where they identify complete and incomplete sen

Label, Sketch & Plan: Prewriting with Pictures
Planning is an important step in writing! This week, students will learn to brainstorm and organize ideas by drawing and labeling a picture related to a personal experience or topic of interest. We’ll introduce graphic organizers like the “Idea Web” and “Sketch & Label Planner.” Students will choose a simple event (like a day at the park) and sketch out important parts of the story, adding labels to key objects or actions. This helps prepare for future narrative writing and builds vocabulary.

I have been teaching young learners for the past 11 years, with most of my experience in kindergarten and Title I classrooms. I am a licensed elementary educator and am passionate about helping children build strong foundations in reading and writing.
Throughout my career, I’ve specialized in supporting early writers—especially those who need extra guidance with sentence structure, punctuation, and organizing their ideas. My background in Title I has given me extensive experience working with diverse learners, including students who need additional literacy support.
I am also Orton-Gillingham certified, which means I’ve been trained in a structured, multisensory approach to teaching reading and writing. I use these strategies to help students feel confident and successful, no matter where they’re starting.
Whether I’m teaching in a classroom or leading an online writing group, my goal is always the same: to make learning joyful, clear, and accessible for every child.
