The instructor will assess learner progress during the class, through the in-class observational experiments and class discussions. We will not be administering tests (which tends to put a damper on enthusiasm), but instead will focus on creatively discussing the concepts learned in class.

このクラスで学べること

This Electromagnetism Camp explores physics content over four 50-minute sessions offered during 1 week (Mon-Thu). Through hands on activities & demos, this camp introduces students to fascinating physics concepts including magnetism, magnetic induction electricity generation, photons and solar energy, while connecting these concepts to useful and amazing inventions. In the process, the course aims to get kids excited about quantum physics and its impact on our lives!

The camp includes the following topics:

Session 1, Magnetism & You: In this session, students learn about the underlying quantum physics concepts that explain magnetism. They will also learn about how magnetism is critical to life on earth, and how magnets and electromagnets are used in everyday life in hidden and surprising ways.

Session 2, Electricity with Magnets?: In this session, students explore one of the most important discoveries of the modern age: how electrical current can be induced in conductive wires via moving magnetic fields. This is the method used to generate 90% of electricity worldwide today! The class will discuss the many forms of magnetic induction electricity generation, as well as the pros and cons of each.

Session 3, Photons & You: This session introduces students to the amazing science of photons and the electromagnetic spectrum. We'll learn how our sun radiates photon energy in a wide range of wavelengths, most of which are invisible to human eyes, and discuss how long it takes photons from the sun to reach earth. We'll discuss how and why atoms release photons in the first place, and then dive into the full range of the photon electromagnetic energy spectrum, from the largest radio waves to the smallest gamma rays.

Session 4, Solar-Energy and Solar-Powered Electricity Generation: The sun is our planet's greatest "free" source of energy, and inventors have developed a wide range of ways to tap into this abundant energy source. We'll discuss inventions that utilize solar heat (thermal) energy, such as solar hot water heaters, solar cookers and passive solar homes. Then we will delve into the more complex topic of electricity generation utilizing photons. We'll investigate the atom Silicon, and discuss how scientists create layers of Silicon in a photovoltaic cell to allow photons to energize electrons, creating an electrical current flow.

The course incorporates physical demonstrations, educational lectures, guided questions and interactive activities by students during class time. The teacher utilizes an inquiry and discussion-based approach so that every student will feel engaged. The course is carefully structured to scaffold complex topics in supported stages.

Please note: This Camp includes content similar to our Electromagnetism Level 1 Course - if your learner has already taken the Electromagnetism Level 1 Course, there will be repetition in the content.

学習到達目標

Learners will be introduced to quantum physics concepts, including atoms, subatomic particles (protons, neutrons, electrons), electromagnetism and photons. Students will be exposed to the practical applications of quantum physics for modern life by exploring technologies for electricity generation through magnetic induction and solar cells. A detailed description of each session's learning goals are listed below:

Session 1, Magnetism & You
Students will learn about:
- Atoms and subatomic particles (protons, neutrons and electrons)
- The cause of magnetism on the atomic level (electron spin)
- The Earth's magnetic field, how compasses work, animals that use the magnetic field to navigate
- Permanent magnets
- Electromagnets
- How electric motors work
- How maglev (magnetic levitation) devices work

Session 2, Electricity with Magnets?
Students will learn about:
- Atoms and subatomic particles (protons, neutrons and electrons)
- The discovery of electricity as a flow of electrical charge (via electrons)
- A key method of electricity generation: magnetic induction. Even with the growth of solar-generated electricity, magnetic induction still provides 90% of electricity worldwide.
- Various forms of magnetic induction electricity generation (such as coal, hydroelectric, nuclear and wind power), with an analysis of their respective strengths and weaknesses.

Session 3, Photons & You
Students will learn about:
- Photons as tiny units of radiated electromagnetic energy
- How photons are released by atoms as electrons change energy levels
- The dual aspects of photons as both particle and wave
- How the sun emits photons that provide essential energy for earth's life forms
- The visible light spectrum
- The electromagnetic radiation spectrum, from large radio waves to tiny gamma waves

Session 4, Solar Energy and Solar-Powered Electricity
Students will learn about:
- The different types of solar energy (thermal energy, light energy)
- Inventions that utilize solar thermal energy
- Inventions that utilize photovoltaic solar cells
- How silicon photovoltaic cells work on an atomic level
- The pros and cons of solar energy
- How inventors continue to develop new ways to utilize solar energy
