Let's read this fun and award-winning book by E.L. Konigsburg. In this book, two children run away and hide out in a museum. They are drawn into a mystery involving a newly acquired sculpture, even as they learn about themselves and the world around them.

We will meet once a week to discuss this book, answer questions, and share the children's thoughts on the book.

At the beginning of class, we will go over the assigned questions. I will ask the questions and the children will share their answers. If there is one that has stumped the children, we will explore it further and discuss ways to figure out the answers to questions. Each child will be encouraged to answer, look at the camera, listen to others, and respond to different ideas/opinions respectfully.

After answering the questions, we will have share time. Each week they will have something that they will work on to share. It may be a vocabulary word they liked. They may be asked to describe a character or find conflict and predict how it will be solved. One week we talk about visualizing, and they will be asked to draw a picture of their favorite part. They will get to share those pictures at the end of the class. Again we will be working on speaking clearly, listening attentively, and using good manners on the computer.

Children should be reading on a fourth-grade level.

Lesson 1 - Come to class having read pages chapters 1 -2 and having answered the comprehension questions. We will be focusing on getting to know the characters and the setting. We will fill in a prediction chart and I will hold on to it until the end. We will see if we got it right at the end of the class.

June 13 - Lesson 2 - The children will come to class having read chapters 3 - 4. There will be questions about what is happening in the story and we will discuss the plot. The students will present their drawings of the museum.

June 20 - Lesson 3 - Discussion of chapters 5 - 6. We will discuss the story, answer comprehension questions, and review vocabulary words. They will present their letters about where to hide in a museum and we will play a vocabulary game.

June 27 - Lesson 4 - They should read 7-8 be read before coming to class, and the questions answered. We will discuss making connections. Each child will be asked to bring a picture of their favorite vocabulary word.

July - 11 - Lesson 5 - We will discuss 9-10. We will complete a story map, and play a game to celebrate the end of the book. They will share the connections they made while reading.

Hi, I'm Rachel Capes! 🌟

I have an Early Childhood Degree and a Master's in Literacy. I spent 12 amazing years teaching 4th and 5th graders, and Kindergarten SPED in public schools. I even got to be a math and literacy coach!

Now, I homeschool my four wonderful kids. One is gifted, two are right where they should be, and one has a learning disability. This time at home has given me a deeper understanding of all learning styles.

I believe learning should be hands-on and fun! Kids should be excited about math and reading.

In math, we use manipulatives, drawing, and algorithms to make learning engaging. When we meet more than once, kids get to share how they solved problems and explain their thinking.

In reading, we dive into books, discuss vocabulary, explore literary elements, analyze characters and plots, and make predictions. Everyone gets to share their thoughts and opinions while respecting others'.

I love to read, be outdoors with my kids, and this year we're learning to garden together. 🌱

I also teach World History and Geography at an accredited homeschool group.

Let's make learning an adventure! 🎉📚✨
