CS Lewis and his Chronicles of Narnia have delighted both children and adults for more than 70 years. Join me for this summer book club as we read and discuss these incredible adventures from the land of Narnia. This class combines individual Narnia book studies into one summer class to make it easier for parents to set a schedule with the greatest flexibility. It allows for students to jump in and out of the class as needed - for example, if a student has already studied one or more of the books, and is interested in joining just for those books they haven't read yet. We will complete one book every two weeks, completing three books in 6 weeks of study. Students will read assigned chapters at home. I will provide an engaging reading guide to help them focus on important details and prepare for discussion. We'll meet together twice a week to discuss various literary elements such as characters, conflict, setting, and themes and share thoughts about the events of the story. Class time will be conducted with a casual, book-club style atmosphere. The discussions will cover various literary topics and each book will be able to stand alone, allowing students to come and go as needed and still be able to participate fully. Our discussions will include combinations of teacher-directed instruction, student-led observations about literary elements and the events of story, and an examination of Lewis' masterful use of figurative language and suspense. Students will be encouraged to share their thoughts and ask questions freely. __________________ SUMMER 2024 READING 1. THE MAGICIAN'S NEPHEW “Exactly as he spoke, Polly's hand went out to touch one of the rings. And immediately, without a flash or a noise or a warning of any sort, there was no Polly.” CS Lewis, The Magician's Nephew Journey far back into Narnian history and discover how it all began. We'll join Digory and Polly on a journey among worlds and watch as Narnia is created and as the first evil enters its realm, and as Digory learns important lessons about friendship and forgiveness. ----------------------------- 2. THE LION, THE WITCH, AND THE WARDROBE "But the moment they were inside they heard the voices in the passage - and then someone fumbling at the door - and then they saw the handle turning. 'Quick!' said Peter, 'there's nowhere else,' and flung open the wardrobe. All four of them bundled inside it and sat there, panting, in the dark." CS Lewis, "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" We will follow the adventures of siblings Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy as they journey through the wardrobe into the land of Narnia and begin a race to save Narnia from the power of the White Witch. Through their adventures, we will examine the themes of family, friendship, forgiveness, sacrifice, and courage. ------------- 3. PRINCE CASPIAN “Aslan" said Lucy "you're bigger." "That is because you're older, little one" answered he. "Not because you are?" asked Lucy. "I am not. But every year you grow, you will find me bigger". ~ CS Lewis, Prince Caspian Join me as the Pevensie siblings return to Narnia. How and why have they been summoned back to Narnia? We will read the book and discuss our thoughts as we discover new adventures and new themes in this continuing Narnia adventure.

The overarching theme of the Narnia stories is the triumph of good over evil and the importance of friendship and sacrifice. There is hopefulness throughout, but dark elements do exist. The various stories may contains elements of deception and misuse of power. There are occasional descriptions of battle scenes, death, and menacing creatures. Parents are encouraged to verify that the books are suitable for their learners. I welcome any messages with questions or concerns.
NOTE: In accordance with Outschool policy, we will not be specifically examining any Christian allusions or allegories found in the work, outside of a general acknowledgement that Lewis' personal faith often informed his writing. This will be noted as a point of literary interest rather than an examination of the theology behind the various literary allusions found in these works.
