During the class, the student will gain ELA tips and tricks to best approach a reading.
Why is the ability to use context clues so important? When we read, we often encounter words we do not know. Vocabulary development plays a prominent role in students’ ability to comprehend a complex text, but young readers are still developing their vocabularies. We can use strategies to help us determine the meaning of a word in a sentence. What comes before and after a new word can reveal its meaning, structure, and use. Good readers are adept at using context clues to help them understand unfamiliar words. In this class, we will practice this strategy so that we can become better readers.

To begin our lesson, I will directly teach five different types of context clues (inference, definition, example, antonym, synonym). Next, we will work through a story told through slides where we will practice using context clues as a group to determine the meaning of words, and we will emphasize metacognition (thinking about your thinking) so that we can carry over our skills to new learning and tasks. Finally, students we be able to practice using these skills individually through gameplay.

Context clues can give your student the power to become a better reader. So, let’s build our vocabularies and increase our reading comprehension together in this fun and interactive class. I can’t wait to see you!

Class will start with 5 advanced level vocabulary words. The student will learn about the meaning and use of the words, see them in the new reading, and be given a task to construct a sentence or paragraph using some or all of the words.

I will have prepared 2-3 short texts (approximately 3-5 paragraphs).
In the first reading, the student will do their best to summarize and share the plot, characters, setting, and answer a few questions related to it.
Then, I will teach them how to use a storyline plot organizer, identify the main idea and key details, and utilize context clues to figure out unfamiliar vocabulary.

With these new learned tools, I will give the learner 1 more short reading and have them use the tools to answer related questions about it both verbally and in writing.

Lastly, the learner will have to listen (aural training) to a short reading without visually seeing the text and answer related questions using the tools learned from the class.

This supports many grade 3,4,5,6 state testing such as Texas STARR ELA testing, NYS ELA testing, California state testing and others. This course is also appropriate for ESL ( English as a second language) learners of intermediate level.
