Welcome to the Storyteller's Workshop, where aspiring writers embark on a journey to master the craft of creative writing. In this dynamic and interactive course, learners will explore the fundamental elements of storytelling, develop their unique writing voice and hone their skills through engaging exercises and constructive feedback. If you dream of becoming a published novelist, or simply enjoy the power of storytelling, join us in the Storyteller's Workshop to unlock your creative potential! Guided by an experienced creative writing teacher, learners will learn essential techniques such as character development, plot structure, dialogue, setting creation, and the effective use of descriptive language to create their very own story. Through clear modelling, plenty of shared writing opportunities and writing prompts spanning a range of genres - everything from mystery to science fiction - this workshop will provide a supportive environment for students to unleash their creativity, work collaboratively with other learners and experiment with different writing styles. Topics covered are: Week 1 - 📈 Understanding the Elements of Storytelling: Learn about character, plot, setting, and theme, and how they interact to create compelling narratives. Week 2 - 🧍🏼 Crafting Dynamic Characters: Develop multidimensional characters with depth, complexity, and relatability. Week 3 - 😯 Building Engaging Plots: Explore various plot structures and techniques for creating suspense, tension, conflict and resolution. Week 4 - 🌇 Crafting Vivid Settings: Master the art of descriptive language to bring settings to life and immerse readers in your world. Week 5 - 💬 Effective Dialogue: Learn how to write dialogue that reveals character traits, advances the plot and enhances storytelling. Week 6 - ✍🏼 Exploring Genre and Style: Experiment with different genres and writing styles to find your unique voice as a writer. Week 7 - ❌ Revision and Editing: Discover strategies for revising and refining your work to improve clarity, coherence, and impact. Week 8 - 🗣️ Sharing and Feedback: Participate in constructive peer critiques and receive tailored feedback from your teacher. By the end of the workshop, students will have developed a portfolio of short creative writing pieces and gained the tools and confidence to continue on in their journey as storytellers.

8. Receive and Give Feedback: Learners will be part of a supportive and constructive workshop environment where peers can give and receive feedback on their writing, helping each other identify strengths and areas for improvement.
9. Build Confidence: As learners progress, they will soon gain confidence in their skills as writers and become more attuned with taking creative risks.

Dear Parents and Guardians,
While my focus for this class is on nurturing creativity and developing your learner’s writing skills, it is important to note that some writing prompts may include themes that are spooky, suspenseful, or mildly scary.
These themes are intended to spark imagination, encourage storytelling, and allow learners to explore different genres of writing. However, I understand that every student has unique sensitivities and comfort levels when it comes to scary or suspenseful content.
Please know that I am committed to creating a safe and supportive learning environment for all learners. You can find an in-depth book list outlining all of the texts referenced in our book club on the Outschool classroom page. Rest assured, the books on this list have been carefully curated through Common Sense Media and are all age-appropriate.
