Beginner Level
🌱 What will be taught:
Learners will discover the basics of container gardening, including how to choose the right container, select soil, and care for their plants.

🌿 Topics we’ll cover include:

What plants grow well in containers

How to prepare soil and plant seeds

How to water and care for your mini garden

The science of plant growth in small spaces

We'll also learn the parts of a plant using a hands-on learning activity (see printable)

🪴 Class structure:
This is a one-time, hands-on 30-minute class. We’ll begin with a short interactive lesson (5–10 minutes), then dive into planting together. Learners will follow step-by-step instructions and have time to ask questions as we go.

🎥 Teaching style:
My teaching style is fun, encouraging, and beginner-friendly. I use real-time demonstrations and guided practice to help learners feel confident and excited about growing something of their own.

💬 Interaction:
This class is highly interactive! Learners will follow along live with their materials, ask questions, and show off their planting progress. There’s no slide deck—just real tools, real soil, and real fun.

Learning Goals

Students will learn how to select appropriate containers, soil, and plants for indoor gardening.
Students will understand the basic principles of growth and how it applies to their lives.

Parental Guidance
This class involves using basic gardening tools and handling soil, which may cause minor messes. Ensure learners have a clean workspace and access to handwashing facilities. There are no official ratings or media content used in this class.
Supply List
Students will need the following materials:

1 small container or pot (with drainage holes)

Potting soil (enough to fill the container) No Miracle Grow Brand

1-2 vegetable or herb plants (for immediate growth potential)
 ***Please select a healthy, viable plant; preferably a vegetable or herb that the family will eat and enjoy as it grows.*** 

A small spoon or hand trowel

A cup of water

dry towel

popsicle stick or tongue depressor

permanent marker

Optional: Gardening gloves and a tray or newspaper to catch soil

I’m the owner of The Backyard Garden Experience LLC, where I teach families how to grow food wherever they’re planted. I have 5 years of hands-on experience designing container gardens, raised beds, and edible landscapes tailored to different spaces and budgets.

I’ve taught gardening classes to children and adults in private sessions, co-ops, homeschool groups, community events, and enrichment programs. I specialize in teaching beginners—especially kids—how to build confidence and connection through growing their own food.

With over 16 years of experience working with children as a homeschool educator, tutor, and program leader, I bring patience, creativity, and practical skill into every lesson.
