Homework
週あたり 1-2 時間. 1. 10 minutes a day of speed reading skills homework during the 5-session class, and then 10 minutes a day for 30 days total. 2. Each class session requires the student to post their experience in response to my questions, as well as post at the beginning of each class what their comprehension was based on comprehension awareness I teach in Class 1.
Assessment
Students should calculate their reading speed every day and post their speed and their comprehension during the timed readings so I can give feedback and they can see their progress. (I teach them how to calculate their reading speed.)

PAPERBACK BOOK REQUIRED. NO E-READERS OR KINDLES. 

Students will learn how to speed read and improve their reading speed by 20% or more in just one week.  The average young reader is around 150 - 200 wpm/minute.  The goal is to increase by 20%-30% during the week of practice.  After a month of daily practice, students should begin to see their normal reading speed increase to 400-600 wpm, and then with practice over 3-6 months, ideally even up to speeds of 1000 wpm. During this week, students will learn the key skills they need to learn to speed read, as well as ways to understand and remember better what they read.  It's imperative they commit to practice these skills for at least 30 days to really see the full effect. 

Students need to come already very comfortably reading chapter books at or below their reading/grade level - please choose one to use all week. Kindles and Cartoon type books will not work.  Speed reading skills will be explained, demonstrated, and then students given an assessment to apply the skill. They should be ready to post their results on the section page for interaction with me.  They will be timed each day to show student their progress almost immediately! 

Parents, please know that students should be comfortably reading chapter books before taking this course.

- Timed a new reading wpm rate

Day 3
- Reading Comprehension Technique #1 - Trained Skimming
- Speed Reading Technique #2 
- Speed Reading test using Technique #2

Day 4 
- Reading Comprehension Technique #2 - RRR - Second R - How to understand and remember what you read
- Smart Reading - Apply speed reading skills to different types of reading
- Warm Up
- Speed Reading Technique #3 - 3-Dot technique for speed reading (Minimal eye fixations)
- Speed reading test using Technique #3

Day 5
- 30-day Homework assignment
- Reading Comprehension Technique #3

Homework
Speed Reading is a skill that requires practice.  Students who do best commit to practicing speed reading 10 minutes a day during this course and after this course for the following 30-days initially and ideally 3-6 months to "cement" this skill in their reading habits and increase their speed with the long-term goal of up to 1000 wpm for certain types of reading.

Assessment
They will be assessed by timing their reading of the week, with regular assessments during the week to mark their progress. They will be informally assessed on comprehension. Parents will receive a written report after the student completes all 5 sessions summarizing their progress.

Materials
1. Several different chapter books at or below grade/reading level. A book that lays flat is best, books the student has not read before are ideal
2. A calculator to quickly count the words and speed
3. Pencil or pen 
4. Note book to take a few notes and keep track of their WPM/words per minute through the week.

It is common that students with ADHD, dyslexia, and other learning needs have found this class helpful. Results are not guaranteed. Students need to learn the techniques and practice them for a minimum of 20 days, and often longer.
保護者へのお知らせ
Please make sure they are not moving their lips as they read. The students should have good posture to be able to apply the reading techniques. This class and the homework should not be done at night when the student is in bed. They need to be alert and sitting with good posture on a sofa or at a table.

A student should be able to read at least 50 wpm before entering this class.
