Diwali is a holiday celebrated all over South Asia that celebrates the triumph of light over dark. In 2023, the holiday will be celebrated on Sunday November 12th! In this class, we will learn more about the artwork involved in the creation and lighting of diyas, or oil/ghee wick lamps that are lit on Diwali. We look at beautiful examples of Diwali diyas and observe details including their shapes, patterns, and lights. After that, we will create our own drawings of beautiful diyas. Learners may either copy designs they see in the examples, or make their own designs. I am looking forward to sharing this beautiful kind of artwork with your learners and see them create diyas drawings for bringing in light and peace in the world!

I have taught learners in K-12 for over a decade in non-formal settings such as afterschool tutoring and weekend enrichment programs. In Hillsborough County, Florida, I was nominated at the SERVE Tutor of the year in 2012. I have also published poetry, magazine articles, and academic book chapters.
