An alpana is a beautiful style of painting traditionally done with rice paste that is common in Bangladesh and eastern India during a festive occasion. Beautiful patterns with flowers, bird feathers, and other designs can be included. In this class, we will learn more about what alpana paintings are, and try to make our own alpana-style paintings! Families will be asked to get a colored sheet of paper(possibly construction or card paper), pencil, paint, paintbrush, and a little jar or bottle of water for their learners to dip their paintbrushes in. If anyone would like to trace circles, squares, half-circles, etc for their design, they can bring object of different shapes to the class for this purpose. Before the class, examples of alpanas will be posted to the classroom page for inspiration. These same examples will be posted up in our class slides for learners to take inspiration from while they do their pre-painting sketch. For 5-10 minutes, we first will learn about the history of alpanas and look at some gorgeous alpana examples. Then, we will use pencil sketch out designs for our alpana paintings with pretty shapes and patterns on our colored paper sheet. A common color for a sheet that is an alpana background is red, but learners can pick any color they like for the background. Finally, we will paint over our sketch lines to bring our colorful alpana to life! Often alpanas have white paint, plus some other colors, with them. While we will not make our own rice paint, we will use regular paint to make our own alpana-style designs
