Get ready for some mouthwatering, down home soul food! In this 3 day cooking camp, students will prepare delicious, soul food inspired dishes. By the end of the camp, learners will have learned how to prepare: Southern Fried Chicken Tenders, Baked Macaroni and Cheese, Candied Yams, Soulful Green Beans, Sweet Down Home Cornbread, Grandma’s Peach Cobbler, and Southern Style Lemonade! 

This class is for learners who already have some experience in the kitchen and are familiar with using both the stove and oven, as well as a knife. The first two days, students will be guided step by step, as Chef Kim prepares the recipes together with the students. The last day, students will demonstrate the skills they have learned, as Chef Kim orally guides the students step by step in completing the recipes. While not a focus, students will be given several opportunities to practice their math skills during the creation of the recipes. Come join Chef Kim and let’s cook from the heart and soul! 

Class will begin with introductions and icebreakers, followed by class rules and kitchen safety. Next, students will review the recipe and check to ensure they have all needed ingredients/supplies. Finally, Chef Kim will guide them step by step, in the creation of the yummy recipes! As the cooking camp progresses, learners will be given more autonomy, while Chef Kim still guides them through the recipes. 

Day 1: Fried Chicken Tenders and Baked Macaroni and Cheese
Day 2: Candied Yams, Soulful Green Beans, and Sweet Down Home Cornbread
Day 3: Grandma's Peach Cobbler and Southern Style Lemonade

* If the minimum number of 6 learners is not met  one week prior to the start date, the class will have to be canceled.*

During my 22 years as an elementary school teacher, I have taught hundreds of students and always strive to make learning fun and exciting. This class is very special  to me because of my love of both cooking and eating soul food. I grew up in the south and have found memories of cooking in the kitchen with my grandmother and mother. I learned from the very best!  Additionally, for the past seven years, my husband and I have been the owners of a catering company that specializes in Jamaican cuisine, sprinkled with a few classic soul food dishes. My husband is from Jamaica and I’m from the south. Jamaican food and good, down home soul food, are my favorites to both cook and eat. I’m so excited to share both my joy and knowledge of cooking soul food with learners!
