A traditional scrapbook is a collection of photos, written descriptions, and "scraps" placed on beautiful papers with stickers and cutouts for the purpose of recording special times in a person's life. In this class, we will also record our lives as they happen, but extend the content to things that will help us to see trends over time--like what the weather has been like, how much things have cost, and what has been happening in our communities. These will be called "observations" in our class, and each week, the students will be encouraged to include some observations on their personal pages, as well as some "experiences", which are the stories they have collected over the prior week. The learners will create a different page each week based on their interests and experiences that week, but each page will include multiple pieces of information about the learner's week, expressed in a variety of ways, like journal entries, poems, and art. The design, form, and most of the content will be up to them, and I will help them to brainstorm ideas as we discuss their week at the beginning of class. They may also use the "Observations" and "Experiences" lists to brainstorm ideas. I will facilitate the conversation to help each learner explore their experiences and feelings, and brainstorm ways to express them creatively. For example, they may choose to describe trying a new food for "new experiences" or write a poem about how they felt when a sibling got them into trouble for "sibling stories". They could also doodle an A+ and math symbols on the page for "successes" and "school experiences". There is a lot of conversation in this class as each learner shares about their week and learners are encouraged to talk to each other and to expand on topics that other learners have shared. There is a strong social club aspect to this class, since the learners continue to chat as they work on their scrapbooks. EXPERIENCES: -School Experiences -Events & Celebrations -Funny Stories -Sad Stories -Emotional Times -Pet Shenanigans -Leisure Time -Family Time -Sibling Stories -Time with Friends -New Experiences -Successes -Trying Again -Meal Time -Adventures with Technology OBSERVATIONS: -Temperatures -Weather Patterns -Signs, Billboards & Advertisements -Popular Music, Movies, etc. -Common Words and Phrases -Prices -Changes -Community Events -Surprising Observations -Construction & New Buildings At the very least, the students will record the dates (so they can look back and see when it was) and an experience each week. A large portion of the class time will be spend creating individual scrapbook pages about our observations, experiences, and emotions from the prior week. So, the creative work will be done in class. Also, examples will be provided of journalled reflections, personal poems, and artwork, as well as fully designed pages, to inspire the students to journal, write poetry, and create their own art. Stickers, magazine clippings, and photos are optional, but would be fun to add to their scrapbook pages, and colourful paper will make the project even more exciting and inspirational, but is not required. If your goal is to keep their scrapbook pages long-term, look for acid-free projects, since they hold up and do not fade like other products. This project, which can be completed for one week, multiple weeks, or a year, is designed to record what is happening in a child's life, around them, and their feelings and reactions. Putting these details into writing and art, trains them to express what they are experiencing and feeling. Our focus is on social-emotional skills, especially emotional awareness and self-expression, so we will work through various aspects of our experiences to process our feelings in a relaxed and creative way. In particular, it allows them to name their emotions, retell their experiences in their own words, and transform every day or stressful moments into creative content. They will also learn how to track and look at their experiences and observations as trends throughout the year, especially if they choose to continue with this scrapbooking/journalling technique long-term. This class involves conversation, art, writing, and presentation (the students share their ideas, progress, and creations). While it is not a therapy class since I have no professional counselling qualifications, it is a calm, reflective, creative, and safe space for students to relax, reflect, and enjoy as they express themselves creatively. ▶️I am dedicated to finding a solution for all families! This is not a therapy class, since I have no professional counselling qualifications. However, it is a calm, reflective, creative, and safe space for students to relax, reflect, and enjoy expressing themselves creatively. These sessions introduce techniques to handle day-to-day stress and anxiety, but are not to be considered therapeutic support for learners suffering from chronic anxiety or anxiety disorders who need a medical service.
However, I will facilitate the conversation to help each learner explore their experiences and feelings and brainstorm ways to express them creatively. In fact, I have been offering classes like this for a number of years, as well as art and English literature classes with discussions of how literary themes relate to the students' lives. Therefore, I have much experience facilitating discussions that are unpredictable. So, although the conversations in this class will be dynamic and based on whatever the students share, I will focus on maintaining a healthy balance of providing a safe place for students to share their experiences and feelings and keeping the environment calm, creative, and positive, with a focus on creative expression.
(I am a calm, empathetic, passionate individual and am known for my positivity, but also for my affirmations and gentle support.)
受講に必要なもの
Learners should have several types of paper, including coloured paper, scissors, glue, pencils/pens, markers, etc. on hand for each class or have a computer program or app installed for designing scrapbook pages. Stickers are fun, but optional. Students may also choose to incorporate magazine clippings and photographs. If the project will be kept and cherished, choose acid-free products.

I am highly trained and experienced in teaching English literature and writing (literary analysis and creative writing), and a great deal of that is based on discussions of the human experience as presented in literature. After all, writers write about what they experience and feel. Literature classes are filled with character analysis and conversations about the character’s evolving emotions and choices in reaction to the mundane, triumphant, and challenging experiences of life. So, I am always expected, as a literature teacher, to help the students to explore themselves and their personal opinions, experiences, and relationships to these themes. This class is only another form of that.
Furthermore, due to my professional expertise, empathetic nature, calm and reassuring demeanor, and intercultural and diversity communication and sensitivity training (to work with immigrating ESL students), I have been asked on various occasions to work together with counsellors to support struggling students by working through their experiences orally or via writing using accompanying literature. Therefore, I have worked on social-emotional skills with gifted and struggling students, and this has become an increasing focus in my regular literature classes, too.
However, this class should in no way be considered a replacement for medical therapy sessions. Instead, it is simply a calm, reflective, creative, and safe space for students to relax, reflect, and enjoy as they express themselves creatively!
