ABOUT THE ROYAL CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC CERTIFICATE PROGRAM The Royal Conservatory Certificate Program is a comprehensive system of music study and assessment from Elementary through to Advanced levels. In many countries, it is considered the gold standard for developing high-calibre musical literacy. Examinations (online and in person options) are available to students beginning at the Preparatory Level and evaluate the performance of repertoire, aural skills and sight singing. Successfully completing exams builds confidence and offers students the opportunity to celebrate achievements. BENEFITS OF THE RCM CERTIFICATE PROGRAM Build self-confidence Cultivate an enjoyment of learning music An appreciate for song of various periods of music including foreign language songs (no experience in foreign languages is needed) Encourage goal setting Students who chose to complete an exam are provided with a national standard for students to track their progress. Promote well-rounded musical training Singers will work towards preparing to take the Royal Conservatory of Music Certificate program (preparatory level) online exam. WHAT WILL BE TAUGHT IN PART I -Songs from the Royal Conservatory of Music preparatory level book including one in Italian. -Vocal technique concepts -Beginning note reading and theory -Beginning theory concepts Some of the songs we will learn in the first half of class are: -A Cookie for Snip -The Rainbow -Almost Asleep -Farfallina bella e bianca (Lovely Little Butterfly) WHAT TOPICS ARE COVERED -Repertoire (including a foreign language selection) -Acting for song -Musical Markings -Ear Training -RCM Exam preparation CLASS STRUCTURE Each class will cover an element of vocal technique, acting, ear training or sight reading and performance. Students will have multiple opportunities during every class to demonstrate what they have learned and receive feedback or corrections. HOW I TEACH Students are encouraged to explore concepts in easy and fun ways to both enjoy the learning process, cultivate confidence, and enjoy singing. TEACHING STYLE Classes are structured so that students know what to expect. Students are encouraged but not required to demonstrate their skills throughout every single class. LEARNER INTERACTION Students will have the opportunity to interact with each other and give positive feedback throughout class. REQURED EXPERINCE -Completion of Beginning Singing for Young Singers Levels III or IV is strongly recommended. Sarah has been teaching private and group voice lessons for 20 years and is a Royal Conservatory of Music Elementary Certified Voice Instructor. She holds a Master of Music in Vocal Pedagogy and Performance and a Bachelor of Music in Performance.
Prior to teaching in Chicago, Sarah taught undergraduate voice at Belmont University working with CCM (contemporary commercial musicians), Bluegrass and Country singers, and was the head of the voice department at the Metropolis Performing Arts School in Arlington Heights.
Sarah’s students include singers of all ages and levels from beginners to touring members of Broadway In Chicago musicals, as well as commercial and recording artist. Her students have performed at The Goodman Theater, Second City, and as leads in musicals and operettas in the greater Chicagoland area. Sarah has prepared high school students who have auditioned for and been accepted to nationally recognized performing arts schools and conservatories for both classical voice and musical theater.
For eight years, Sarah was a teaching artist with The Lyric Opera of Chicago's OperaKids! program. This year long residency in Chicago public schools focuses on integrating opera into age appropriate curriculum. During this program, Sarah produced and directed an opera written by the students during this residency, as well as Stone Soup, an opera commissioned by the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
As an instructor of musical theater, Sarah co-founded two training programs: The Chicago Broadway Studio, an avenue for training young singing actors, and The Broadway Vocal Arts Summer Intensive Program for college students.
A member of the National Association for Teachers of Singing, Sarah served on the board for six years as co-chair for the Musical Theater competition and as an adjudicator for both musical theater and classical competitions. She was awarded a National Association for Teachers of Singing Independent Teacher Fellowship in 2011.
Sarah has also been trained as a Level II Singing Voice Specialist (SVS). As a SVS, she is skilled in singing voice therapy principles and planning, techniques for singing behavior change, and principles in therapeutic songs, and holistic methods for preventing vocal re-injury. In addition to singing training, Sarah has also studied human anatomy and physiology to fully understand how our muscles function and the breathing process during the singing.
