このクラスで学べること

As a former member of a Marine Corps Sniper Team, I spent many months in forests, deserts, and unpredictable environments. The military survival instruction I received was critical to my success. And I want to share that knowledge with you!

This course is geared towards 8-13 year-old students (though the content is appropriate for students of all ages). All students are welcome to attend!

This 15-week course will include instruction in fieldcraft (forest/desert survival), urban survival, and overall situational awareness.

The format of this course will be lecture, photographs, diagrams, and demonstrations--as well as discussion. I will engage students by soliciting their experiences and by presenting "what if" scenarios for their consideration.

During this course of study students will learn to master the following areas:

THIRD SEMESTER TOPICS:--- You can do the semesters in any order or concurrently if you wish.

Week 1: Soda Can Hacks-- In this class we will discuss the many items that can be constructed out
of a soda can. Why? Because we often find soda and beer cans in the wilderness. This
is bad for the environment but good for survivalists. Project in this lesson.

Week 2: Leeches and Ticks-- These creatures are a nuisance and they can carry diseases. It is
important that students understand what they are, where they can be found, and how
to remove them asap. Many people find these creatures disgusting—rightly so—but
they must be dealt with. Eventually, nearly everyone will have an experience with ticks
and/or leeches. After this class—students will know what to do when that happens.

Week 3: Snakes-- One of the most common and dangerous predators on the planet—survivalists
must know what to do when encountering a snake. We will discuss venomous, non-
venomous, and constrictors; where they can be found, and what to do if bitten. Project in this class.

Week 4: Urban Survival--This class discusses what to do if you find yourself in an urban (city)
setting during a natural disaster or other civil emergency. For those of us living in or
near a city—this is a very likely situation we might experience. Knowing what to do in a
urban setting is quite different than a wilderness setting. Project in this class.

Week 5: Predators-- Alligators and Wild Boars and more. Students will learn about alligators,
wild boars, and other predators as well as how to respond when encountering one of
these predators. Your response is everything! Project in this class.

Week 6: Survive an airplane crash-- Chances of being involved in an airplane or helicopter crash
are low- but survivalists need to know how to respond…just in case. We will discuss
where to sit, what to do before and after a crash, and strategies to avoid the crash in the
first place.

Week 7: Natural Disasters-- Students will learn how to react to natural disasters such as
lightning storms, earthquakes, and tornados.

Week 8: Scenario Class--What to do if your car flips over; How to deal with hypothermia;
Improvised tools for survival situations; and more. Project in this class.

Week 9: Water survival in a life raft-- This class teaches how to survive in an ocean
setting—inside a life raft.

Week 10: Water survival open water-- This class teaches how to survive long periods of time in
the water (without a life raft). Project in this class.

Week 11: Dangerous Insects-- Insects are fascinating and amazing. Many can be eaten for survival.
However, some are very dangerous and even deadly. This class will discuss many of the
most dangerous insects the survivalists must identify. Project in this class.

Week 12: Fieldcraft--Students will learn how to carve a wooden spoon—a must for surviving in
the wilderness, as we will see. Students will also make a drinking cup out of duct tape
and a wooden tripod for cooking and boiling water.

Week 13: How to survive quicksand, a dog attack, a shark attack and how to build a field stretcher.

Week 14: Fish—the great survival food. Students will learn everything they need to know about
fish in a survival situation including identification, fishing, cleaning, and more. This is a
must-know topic for the survivalist. Students will earn how to make several different
fishing hooks out of natural elements.

Week 15: Jungle Hazards-- Is it easy to survive in the jungle? No—it is extremely difficult. The
jungle possesses many hazards the survivalist must consider and deal with. From
venomous creatures to natural hazards, this class will prepare the student to survive
and thrive in a jungle setting. Project in this class

For this course, no prior experience or knowledge is required. My goal is for students to be empowered to overcome any obstacle or situation they may face in the wilderness.

My teaching style is casual, humorous, friendly, positive, and socially neutral. I understand students come from many various backgrounds. I want the students in my class to be prepared to survive and thrive if things go bad--or if they experience a difficult situation. I want to share my experience and training with them so they can take care of themselves and their loved ones. With the know how presented in this class, they will be able to do so.

Students will be encouraged to ask questions or seek clarification at any point during the instruction. Such interaction is the best way for this specialized knowledge to be understood and absorbed.

I solicit friendly participation from all students and have found that even the most stand-offish students eventually join in the weekly conversations with enthusiasm.

I allow time during and after class for student questions. If I go over the allowed time, no problem.

This class will deal with potentially scary topics such as wilderness scenarios, disasters, and being lost. However, graphic or gory images, over-the-top illustrations, and/or detailed specifics will not be part of the curriculum. We will be discussing ways to start fires with tools and without tools as a class discussion. We will not actually physically start a fire but parents may want to talk with their student after this class regarding safety. We are also discussing water treatment and will emphasize seeking parent help should they wish to try the technique to purify water. I will always send the student to the parent for supervision in areas where safety is a concern. Parents should be aware we will discuss topics related to wilderness survival and that I will present all of these topics in as positive a manner as possible and in the spirit of survival...and overcoming obstacles.
受講に必要なもの
A pencil and paper may be helpful to take notes in class. I do send out a handout after each class with information that we covered. A supply list will be emailed prior to the first class meeting.

I am a proud, former member of a United States Marine Corps Sniper Team, Second Battalion, Third Marine Division, stationed out of KMCAS, Hawaii. I received extensive training in the military. I attended training such as: jungle survival, cold weather, desert survival and as a combat medic and EMT for that team. I served during the Gulf Wars and have extensive experience in the areas I teach. After my time with the Marines, I entered civilian Law Enforcement in Jacksonville Florida. Today, I share the knowledge I was given with others.
