This class typically meets twice a week for two weeks, but if you have a special request for meeting once a week, please send me a message. If you would like the class to meet for 4 days in 1 week, here is the link to that class: https://outschool.com/classes/science-with-miss-robyn-chemistry-basics-for-beginners-camp-YP1350z9?usid=uC7yyZ48&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link Chemistry is all around us! In this 4 day class, the kids will learn about basic chemistry concepts such as atomic structure, chemical bonds, and molecules. On day 1 we will learn about sub atomic particles and the nucleus. The kids will use the periodic table as well. The kids will be engaged through a slideshow, video clips, and a hands-on project. We will build an atomic model of an element from the periodic table using your choice of either clay , play doh or edible items such as gummy bears, gumdrops, or other small objects. Day 2 Kids will learn facts about electrons such as their charge and location in an atom. We will focus on learning about electron shells, orbitals, and writing electron configurations. The kids will be engaged through class discussion, and I will also share my screen so the kids can view the periodic table. I will show the kids how to draw Bohr models, and how to write electrons on the Bohr model practice paper. I will also show the kids how to write the electron configurations of elements from the periodic table. The kids will also use their class handout of a Bohr model and small different colored objects of their choice to model electron placement of different elements. The kids will be able to engage with each other and me throughout the class by unmuting their microphones to ask questions and to help each other. Day 3 The kids will be introduced to the very basics of chemical bonds. We will learn about ions and ionic bonds as well as covalent bonds. We will use the double Bohr model handout and small manipulatives to place on the handouts to show how ions and ionic bonds are formed and how covalent bonds are formed. I will share my screen so that the kids can see examples of electron dot diagrams so they can learn how to write them. The kids will be able to interact with me and each other during class by unmuting their microphones to ask questions and work with their classmates. They can also share their work. Day 4 The kids will learn how atoms form different bonds to create molecules. By sharing my screen, we'll use the periodic table to select different elements to create models of the different molecules that the elements can make when they bond with each other. The kids can use edible materials such as gummy bears, different colored marshmallows, gumdrops to make their models. You can view the supply list for other items to use to make the models. We will share our models with each other as we make them. *******Handouts of the Bohr model worksheet, Bohr model practice, the double Bohr model, and the periodic table need to be printed for class. Other supplies are listed in the learner supply list.********
