Introduction to the Experiment: 5 minutes Learners will be introduced to the background (previous research) regarding the experiment we will be conducting. Here it is the acid-base reaction. Write our Purpose: 10 minutes Learners will have a chance to use the background information given to write a purpose of the experiment (with help from the teacher where needed) Write the Hypothesis: 10 minutes Learners will make a hypothesis regarding what they think will happen during the...
Pencil Paper Graphing paper 5 plastic bottles (8 oz. works best) Vinegar (~16 oz.) Baking soda (one container) Baking powder (one container) 6 balloons (regular size) Funnel Masking tape Measuring spoons Measuring tape (a flexible one that can measure around the balloon)
1. Common vinegars are weak acids that contain 4 to 8 percent acetic acid, which can erode the skin and cause minor chemical burns if applied and left on the skin in large amounts under occlusion (which we will not be doing in this experiment). Although this risk is minor, learners will be instructed to wash their hands after dealing with vinegar to mitigate this risk. 2. While it's generally not harmful, baking soda can irritate the skin. Most people don't know they are sensitive to baking soda until they start applying it directly to their skin. We will not be applying the baking soda to our skin, but we will be washing our hands after the application of baking soda to mitigate any risk of a rash. 3. Baking powder is considered nontoxic when it is used in cooking and baking. However, serious complications can occur from overdoses or allergic reactions. Learners will not be eating any baking powder during this experiment. Hand washing will be instructed after handling baking soda. **Overall, none of the ingredients used in this experiment are considered harmful in the context of their use, we will be washing our hands after their use for safety. If your learner may have allergies it is recommended that they where gloves during the experiment to mitigate any risk.
