Come join this interactive, fun class to brush up on your reading and writing skills to help get prepared for sixth grade! Class Content: During this course we will meet to review fifth and sixth grade skills. During class we will use a variety of methods and learning styles including hands-on projects, paper assignments, sorts, visuals, books, and other activities to help all learners engage and make the most of this class and reinforce reading and word study skills. We will play games, complete projects and work on listening skills. Why This Class: I have been a brick and mortar teacher for ten years working with all elementary levels. I have seen through experience that school breaks are a critical time to keep those skills sharp and prevent the slides back in their education. Class Materials: Each week learners will be sent all print outs prior to class. These print outs will include a variety of activities for class including a book that all learners can print and keep. Learners will also need basic supplies available for class. These will include pencils, coloring materials, scissors, and glue. Special Considerations: Class dynamics may adjust time requirements up to 5 minutes. Daily Schedule: 5 minutes: introduction and warm up activity 10 minutes: word study skills 10 minutes: presentation of comprehension skill 20 minutes: book or passage 10 minutes: comprehension activity Tech usage: During class we may play online games utilizing kahoot. Please ensure you’re student either knows how to split their screen or is fine with pairing up with someone or with me depending on class dynamics. Week 1 Fiction Day 1 Prefixes and Suffixes Inferencing Day 2 Greek Roots Theme Day 3 Latin Roots Plot Day 4 Context Clues Point of View Day 5 Synonyms and Antonyms Summarizing Week 2 Nonfiction Day 1 Word Relationships Text Structure Day 2 Adages, Idioms, Proverbs Main Idea and Key Details Day 3 Figurative Language Text Evidence, Quoting from the Text Day 4 Figurative Language Compare and Contrast: theme, topic, and structure **Day 5 Poetry
