We will first cover the context of the play as Shakespeare wrote it- England during the Elizabethan Era- a time of deep division and fear, though also a time of radical ideas. I will then provide a quick and entertaining summary of the play and characters, emphasizing how Shakespeare dramatizes issues teenagers still go through- peer pressure, bullying, violence, and the pain of loss. The lesson will conclude with me helping the students fill out a character sheet that I will provide, to use as a general reference for a more in-depth analysis of the play.

Students will get a clear understanding of the events, themes, and characters of Romeo and Juliet and hopefully, gain an appreciation for its timeless appeal.
