This ongoing series of classes will focus on one type of graph per week - scatter graphs, bar charts, line graphs, pie charts and histograms. Students may join at any time as each class stands on its own and the topics will rotate every five weeks. Students are encouraged to continue for all five weeks to complete the full set, and are welcome to continue if they wish to review.

Histograms (week beginning 5th July)
We will learn when histograms are used, how to calculate the area of each section, plotting data accurately and interpreting histograms. Materials required: graph paper (pdf printout provided) or squared paper, pencil, ruler and (optional) coloured pencils.

Scatter graphs (week beginning 12th July)
This class reviews how to structure a scatter graph, label the axis correctly, scale the axis, plot data points, draw error bars and draw a trend line/ line of best fit. We will also learn when scatter graphs are used and how to describe the trend using correct scientific conventions. Materials required: graph paper (pdf printout provided), pencil and ruler.

Bar charts and pictograms (week beginning 19th July)
This class will focus on how to draw bar charts. We will learn suitable scenarios for when bar charts should be used, how to label the axis, plotting bars accurately, adding error bars and drawing conclusions from the data. We will also look at pictograms and how they can also be used to represent data in a more visual and fun way. Materials required: graph paper (pdf printout provided) or squared paper, pencil, ruler and (optional) coloured pencils.

Pie charts (week beginning 26th July)
We will learn which scenarios pie charts are used for, how to calculate the degrees for each segment and using colours or textures to represent information. Materials required: pie chart template (pdf printout provided) or protractor and pair of compasses, pencil, ruler and (optional) coloured pencils.

Line graphs (week beginning 2nd August)
This class will focus on line graphs, particularly when they are used (as opposed to a scatter graph), how to label and scale the axis, plotting data points and drawing line traces. We will analyse example line graphs to identify and describe trends in data. Materials required: graph paper (pdf printout provided), pencil and a ruler.

My classes are highly interactive yet academically focused, with all learners encouraged to actively participate. This includes questions, discussions and activities. I also put significant emphasis on encouraging learners to develop genuine skills and understanding while fostering a scientific mindset, rather than just learning how to pass exams. I prepare professional slides to accompany my classes, thus ensuring each class has a clear structure with visual prompts, useful definitions and on-screen activities.

Learners should have a basic understanding of scientific experiments, as may be gained from primary school science investigations. They should be confident with core mathematical skills such as addition and division, as well as some familiarity with plotting simple graphs. Most importantly, learners should have an inquisitive mind and be willing to learn.
学習到達目標
Students will learn (depending on the graph type):
- Analysing numerical data by identifying anomalies and calculating the mean
- When to use each type of graph and what type of data it is suitable for
- How to label the axis correctly with the independent/ dependent variables
- How to scale the axis to "zoom in" on the data points
- How to draw error bars to show the range in data
- How to draw a line of best fit or trend line
- How to identify and describe trends in data using correct scientific terminology and conventions
