In this fun reading readiness class, children will be introduced to one letter of the alphabet during each class by making a handprint picture, viewing and discussing objects and pictures of items beginning with the letter and then learning a song which teaches the letter, letter sound and objects beginning with the letter sound. Young children learn best when they are able to touch and do. This class gives them the opportunity to participate with art and music, helping increase retention. Children WILL need assistance with the making of the handprint.

Washable tempera paint in the color requested each week. Over the course of all weeks we will use red, yellow, white, brown, gray, orange, purple, green, and blue. Each Saturday, the colors needed for the upcoming week will be listed in the classroom. You could easily mix a touch of red with blue to make the purple, etc. in order to purchase fewer colors! You will also need a protected area for the painting portion of the class, a small paint brush to paint the appropriate color on your child’s hand, a painter’s smock or old shirt, heavy paper or appropriate material for the painted product, and markers or colored pencils for details added after the paint dries. You also might want paper towels or wipes nearby. Since an adult will lightly paint the child’s hand and place it on the paper, this is not as messy as it may seem. Better to be prepared, however.
