In this ongoing course designed for learners with special needs (autism, Down syndrome, cognitive disabilities, dyslexia, and related challenges), we will practice reading while building foundational literacy skills. Each week, students will strengthen their abilities in phonics, sight words, fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension through engaging, supportive activities. Each class will stand alone, so learners can join at any time!

🌟 What Will Be Taught:

💡Phonics skills (magic 'e'; vowel teams and diphthongs; blends; digraphs; trigraphs; soft 'c' and 'g'; r-controlled vowels; 'glued' sounds; 'floss' rule; suffixes)

     💡Sight word recognition

     💡Vocabulary development

     💡Fluency

     💡Comprehension skills

🌟 Skills Your Child Will Gain:

     ✅Stronger phonics decoding skills

     ✅Faster, smoother reading (fluency)

     ✅Improved sight word recognition

     ✅Expanded vocabulary knowledge

     ✅Better reading comprehension strategies

     ✅Increased reading confidence and independence

✅Enhanced ability to focus and stay engaged with text

🌟 Class Structure Each Week:

❤️Question of the Day/Warm-up Activity: Build comfort and connection

❤️Phonics Review: Quick review of last week’s skill

❤️Phonics Skill of the Week: Introduction and practice of a new concept

❤️Sight Word Review: Practice common sight words for automatic recognition

❤️New Sight Word of the Week: Learn and practice a new sight word

❤️Vocabulary Practice: Introduced naturally from the weekly reading

❤️Reading Practice: Teacher models reading strategies; students practice with support through choral reading, echo reading, and solo reading of a provided digital book

🌟 Teaching Methods:

📖Explicit instruction on phonics and syllable rules

📖Multisensory instruction using visual, auditory, and kinesthetic techniques

     📖Constant review of skills

     📖Teacher modeling

📖Echo reading (teacher reads, student repeats) to model pacing and tone

📖Choral reading (reading together) to build fluency without pressure

📖Supported solo reading to build confidence and independence

While I am not formally certified in the Orton-Gillingham approach, I have studied its methods extensively and incorporate many OG-inspired strategies into my teaching. This includes a multisensory, structured approach to phonics and reading that supports learners with dyslexia and other reading challenges.

🌟 Materials:
We will use a variety of texts, including fiction, nonfiction, poetry, Readers’ Theatre, and more.

🌟 Weekly Themes:

📅 Week of April 27 - Sight Words: "the," "of," "a," "and"; bl- and cl- blends

📅 Week of May 4 - Sight Words: "to," "in," "is"; fl- and gl- blends

📅 Week of May 11 - Sight Word: "you"; pl- and sl- blends

📅 Week of May 18 - Sight Word: "that"; br- and cr- blends

Each time we cycle through the phonics skills and sight words, we will go back to the beginning of the list and review them.

I provide a supportive, low-pressure environment where students are encouraged to build their reading skills at their own pace, with individualized feedback and positive reinforcement. I understand that some learners experience fear or anxiety about reading aloud. While I will never force a child to read, hearing each learner read individually is important for helping me identify areas where they need support. I will always encourage solo reading gently and slowly, as the learner seems ready, using a variety of supportive strategies. I celebrate their efforts at every step!

Please reach out with any questions or concerns. I am here to help you and your learner!

Our class will cover a variety of topics such as home, family, pets, entertainment, and more. If your child has any specific fears, such as clowns or dogs, please kindly message me through Outschool to let me know. Additionally, if your learner or family does not eat certain kinds of foods (pork, candy, etc.), or does not celebrate certain holidays, please let me know so I can tailor the class content accordingly. I will use presentations that I have created on Canva. I will send links for the parents and learners to view at home; no account will be needed.

受講に必要なもの
All of these items are optional, but very helpful:

● POP IT FIDGET TOY (any brand or color, with at least 6 bubbles in a straight line) for practicing phonemes (sounds within a word). We will use this in class.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

To keep class running smoothly, learners won't use these items during our sessions; however, they are great for extra practice at home. I will be demonstrating with these during class.

● MAGNET WAND WITH METAL RINGED CHIPS for practicing word blending at home.

I have also seen these at Hobby Lobby, as well as similar wands in sewing stores. It is sometimes called a 'BINGO wand'.

During my Master’s in Elementary Education with Reading Specialist endorsement program, I had many classes which addressed special needs and individual differences, as well as how to adapt curricula and lessons to meet those needs. I am a National Writing Project fellow (‘96-’97), in which I learned and practiced a variety of strategies for teaching writing to students with intellectual disabilities.

I have been teaching learners with special needs for 31 years. I have helped learners improve their knowledge and usage of grammar, as well as their syntax. For example, in answering “What did you do yesterday?”, one learner initially gave responses such as, “Did you go to the store” and “[Name] likes hamburger French fries.” After tutoring, the learner consistently responds with appropriate answers, such as, “I went to the store with Mommy. I bought a puzzle.” I have also had much success with encouraging preverbal learners to speak and even answer simple questions.
