During this ongoing class, we will read a Mo Willems story each week and discuss important concepts including characters, setting, lesson, problem, solution, and more. Learners will actively participate reading aloud and providing a voice for the characters in these books. Learners will have opportunities to read and reread the text to improve both fluency and prosody (the stress and intonation on words). After learners complete the reading of the book, we will discuss the characters, the setting, the plot, vocabulary, and other comprehension questions. Learners will have a chance to share how the story we read together is related to their own lives. This class is designed for second graders, but open to younger and older students reading at or near the 2nd grade level. Learners must be able to read independently in this class. Hi, I specialize in teaching reading. It is my passion to introduce students to books and develop a love for reading in kids of all ages. I have a masters degree in education from Columbia University's Teachers College and a special education certificate in special education from Brooklyn College in New York City. I have worked as a peer tutor, as a test prep tutor, and as an Orton-Gillingham tutor, helping students overcome various reading difficulties to achieve their goals. I also worked as a reading teacher and a special education teacher at a title 1 charter school in NYC. I believe that every child has the potential to become an avid reader, we just have to ignite their passion and build their skills in an individualized way. I recently moved from NYC to live near the ocean. My hobbies include going to the beach, traveling, playing tennis, and or course READING!
