In these 1:1 tutoring sessions, learners will become more fluent readers by learning how to read accurately, fluidly, and with “proper intonation, phrasing, and expression.” The topics included in this class are reading accuracy, speed, and expression. When learners have grown in these areas, their minds are freed up to comprehend what they’re reading. The class is flexibly structured. Each session is tailored to the individual needs of the learner. Examples of what may happen during a session: -Echo-reading: where I fluently read aloud a passage and then the learner reads it, mimicking how my fluency and expression -Reader’s Theater: where we work on expression and phrasing using scripts from plays -Reading passage that are below the learner’s current level -Re-reading passages that may be a bit more difficult The sessions are very interactive. I’ll have books, games and slides prepared, and there will be plenty of reading and good discussion.

Learners will become more fluent and expressive readers.
Learners will grow in reading accuracy, meaning they’ll begin to make fewer errors while they’re reading. They will learn to notice when something doesn’t make sense in their reading.
For example, reading the sentence, “Leslie sat on her front porch and had a snack,” but saying, “Leslie sit in her front porch and had a snake.” Too many errors renders a sentence meaningless.
Learners will develop the ability to “read like they’re talking.” A reader must not read too quickly, too slowly, or in a choppy way. Reading in these ways makes it difficult to comprehend what one is reading.
Learners will develop prosody or “reading with expression”. Prosody is “the skill of reading aloud with proper intonation, phrasing, and expression.” Reading with prosody frees up the brain to enjoy and comprehend what’s being read.
Learners will become more confident readers and speakers.
