This is a ongoing class that will focus on reading a part of the text each week and then answering a range of questions: multiple choice, true or false, single sentence answers, vocabulary, and language analysis. The first book is Phyllis and The Fossil Finders. During class we will read from the Ebook, which will be displayed on the screen, and students will have their own weekly pdf copy of the extract/chapter to use during the class. The class will start by reading the weekly extract (students who are confident to read to the class will be given a chance over the course of the lessons) and then a discussion of what we have read, then students will answer a series of questions. Class will finish with a prediction of what might happen next. Students will have a homework sheet that they can complete and send for feedback. Week 1: starting March 4th - reading chapter 1 - predictions, comprehension questions and introduction to the characters - predictions for chapter 2. Week 2: starting March 11th - reading chapter 2 - comprehension questions, character profiles, setting - predictions for chapter 3. Week 3: starting March 18th - reading chapter 3 - comprehension questions, discussion of the problem - predictions for chapter 4. Week 4: starting March 25th - reading chapter 4 - comprehension, character profiles, writing about a character - predictions for chapter 5. Please note the pace of the lessons may alter slightly to take into consideration the learning pace of the class and sections of the book the class may want to explore in more detail. Please note - students who join class after the first lesson will be given previous chapters to read in order to understand the story - but this class does build on the previous weeks content.

Jacob the main character displays signs of neurodiversity but is in a strong friendship group - his storyline highlights the underlying message of diversity and inclusivity.
Gabi displays symptoms of an invisible condition – consistent with chronic fatigue syndrome - this storyline shows the power of friendship.
Nakeisha is unable to swim and is afraid of water - a fear many young children share.
Faizal is often preoccupied with his ‘looks’ and initially treats Sam very unfairly – his storyline helps children understand not to judge people by the way they look.
Sam is an outsider - his storyline in the book teaches children how to be kind, and how bullying can affect children.
Mr Penniket is the ‘bad guy’ in the story – his storyline again teaches about trust and not judging people before you know them properly.
受講の前提条件
Students should already be independent readers - this is not a learn to read class. Students need to have a reading age of 8 to 11 in order to access the book and work on their comprehension skills.
受講に必要なもの
Students will be supplied with all the resources - ideally these would be printed before the lesson. However, all resources will be on screen and as long as students have access via a computer after class homework can be completed on a google or word doc and sent for feedback.

I am a fully qualified teacher (UK) and have taught at KS2, KS3, and KS4 for over 20 years (8 to 18). I have experience of teaching books at all these stages. In addition to my teaching role, I have also been a reading coordinator in two of my previous Secondary schools.
