In this course, we will explore the lives of teenagers as portrayed in some of the most iconic coming-of-age novels, comparing how the challenges and experiences of these young characters relate to the lives of teenagers today. We’ll dive into the worlds of Great Expectations, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Romeo and Juliet, The Wednesday Wars, and the graphic novel The Complete Persepolis as well as poetry and film adaptations.

Throughout the year, we'll ask important questions: Are the struggles of Pip, Huck, Juliet, Marjane, and Holling Hoodhood still relevant for teenagers today? How have these classic characters shaped our understanding of adolescence, and do their stories resonate with modern issues that teens face? By the end of the year, you will gain a deeper understanding of how these novels not only reflect the struggles of their time but also provide timeless insights into the journey of growing up, no matter when or where you live.

This course is designed for 13-16 year olds, will fulfill requirements for 9th-10th ELA credit, and will encourage you to critically engage with these texts and reflect on your own experiences, discovering how the past and present can inform each other. Ready to embark on a year of discovery? Let’s get started!

Huckleberry Finn: The novel's frequent use of the "n-word" and other derogatory language towards Black Stereotypical Portrayals: Some argue that the novel perpetuates harmful stereotypes of Black people, particularly in the character of Jim, who is often portrayed as ignorant and superstitious. Despite the controversy, the novel is considered a classic of American literature, and some argue that its exploration of themes like freedom, slavery, and prejudice is valuable. Sensitive approach to the teaching of this novel by teacher. Wednesday Wars: Critics suggest that the novel might oversimplify complex historical events and characters, such as the Vietnam War and the portrayal of Vietnamese people. The novel provides a glimpse into the social and political climate of the 1960s, allowing readers to understand the events and issues of that time. Many educators and readers find the book engaging and thought-provoking, sparking discussions about important themes and historical events.

With 20+ years of experience teaching 9th-10th English and Humanities, I’ve guided countless students to master critical skills in literature, reading comprehension, writing, and verbal reasoning.
This semester your student will embark on a journey of self-reflection as they study coming-of-age literature presented in varied genres. I facilitate thought-provoking discussions and skill-building assignments. Twice weekly, I’ll work with your student live, helping them explore the many genres, develop strong writing techniques, and build confidence in their abilities. On the other days, you’ll have access to curated materials and guidance to keep the momentum going at home.

By the end of the semester, your student will not only earn high school credit equivalent to traditional schools but also grow in their ability to think critically, express ideas clearly, and tackle challenges head-on.

This isn’t just another English class—it’s a chance for your 13-15 year-old to thrive while working with lasting literature. Let’s work together to ensure they’re equipped for success now and in the future.

Ready to help your student take the next step?

Because I have a Bachelor's Degree in Education and am a certificated K-12 teacher, most ESA / charter scholarships / state reimbursement programs that cover Outschool classes will cover my classes. Check it out.
