このクラスで学べること

英語レベル - 不明
米国の学年 2 - 5
Learners will read E.B. White’s classic novel 𝑪𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒍𝒐𝒕𝒕𝒆’𝒔 𝑾𝒆𝒃. The teacher will facilitate the learners taking turns reading paragraphs, and will offer gentle pronunciation correction and help sounding out new words. The goal is to read one chapter each class (three chapters per week) so that we finish the entire novel together by the end of the eight-week course. Some classes are able to read more quickly than others and we will adjust the pace to fit the particular learners in each class.

Class instruction will begin by ensuring that learners understand how to tell where paragraphs begin and end. The teacher will explain that paragraphs change with new ideas or when a different character speaks. The teacher will also show learners how to look for the indentation at the beginning of a new paragraph.

Following each class reading time, the teacher will ask questions to check for comprehension and facilitate a class conversation about the reading. The class will discuss the themes of the novel, make predictions about what will happen next, compare and contrast characters, and look at the different settings as we move through the novel. The teacher will also teach vocabulary as learners encounter new words for the first time.
学習到達目標
The learning goals are improved reading fluency and comprehension. This class also allows learners to practice engaging in a conversation around a text they are reading.

I have a master of arts degree in American history, and bachelor of arts degrees in political science, English, and communications with a journalism emphasis. I am lead teacher at The Foster Woods Folk School, which focuses on humanities education within an ecosocial justice framework aimed at celebrating and improving our connections as a global community of humans and non-humans living on Planet Earth. In this role, I work with learners of all ages with a primary focus of working with learners in grades three through 12. I was the director of a social justice center for three years during which time I routinely taught about and facilitated conversations about historical and current political events for both teen and adults participants. Before that, I was a newspaper editor and reporter for 15 years. I have been teaching history, social studies, and English Language Arts classes for several years.
