We will cover how to hold or sit at the harp, correct hand placement when plucking the strings, how to read the treble and bass clef, musical notation, and playing in the keys of C major and A minor. For students who are not beginners, I will join them at their current level and help them progress onward, including using levers or pedals to play with sharps and flats (if their harp has these), understanding more advanced music theory such as common modes in Celtic music, and learning to tune their harp by themselves. I am open to using a variety of harp method books, or on-line resources, and I am always happy to help students find and learn favorite songs.

I have experience as a special education teacher and am always ready to adapt the lessons to a student's particular needs! My area of expertise is autism, but I have worked with many students with a variety of needs.

Nothing scary involved, although the fingers might feel sore at first from contact with the harp strings.

Students can come with no experience at all, although previous piano or other music lessons would give them a head start in understanding how to read music for the harp.

I prefer to meet students and choose materials after we see what might be best for them. Every student has a unique set of circumstances!

I grew up with a pianist father and violinist mother, and spent hours in childhood sitting under the grand piano while my dad played. I began piano lessons myself at age five, and really can't remember a time when I didn't know how to read music or play it. I've been teaching piano and violin on and off for twenty years, but harp is a more recent endeavor for me.
