Private lessons are an excellent way for musicians to improve their flute-playing and overall musicianship! In order to help you decide if lessons might be for you, please read the FAQ's below:

🎶 Why should I take private lessons? Private lessons are a great option for any learner that is excited about the flute and wants to learn instrument-specific skills to level-up their playing. Many students receive instruction in school or community ensembles (band, orchestra, etc.); while ensemble learning is important, not all ensemble directors are flute (or woodwind) specialists, and their job is to guide all musicians (regardless of instrument) as a group. Private lessons provide an opportunity for students to receive the FULL ATTENTION of a flute specialist (me! 😊) to focus on skills that will improve their performance on their instrument and gain specific and general musical knowledge. In lessons, students learn about everything from proper flute care and maintenance, tone development, articulation, and posture, to flute extended techniques, flute solo and etude repertoire, audition prep, how to practice effectively, and even what features to consider when looking to purchase a new flute.

🎶 Should I take 30-minute, 45- minute, or 60-minute lessons? The lesson length depends on the needs of each student. Students who are between the ages of 8-10 and have not taken private lessons or any music classes before may benefit from starting out at a 30-minute lesson, and moving up to a 60-minute lesson once they feel ready. If a student between the ages of 8-10 have taken private lessons before or feel comfortable focusing for 60 minutes, they may start out at the 60-minute lesson. Students who are between the ages of 11-13 may feel comfortable jumping into 60-minute lessons from the start. It is highly recommended that students from the age of 14-18 take 60-minute lessons, in order to have time to work through a warm-up, scales, etude, ensemble music, and solo repertoire as needed.
**INTERESTED IN 60-MINUTE LESSONS? Check out my other class "Private Flute Lessons 60 MINUTES (1:1 Tutoring, Ages 8-18, ALL Skill Levels)"
**INTERESTED IN A ONE-TIME LESSON? Send me a message to schedule!

🎶 What previous experience or knowledge do I need to take lessons? Students must provide their own flute (message me if you need help with choosing a flute! See more in the Materials section). Students are not required to have prior experience playing in an ensemble. It is not a requirement to be able to read music. Please note that the pace of lessons will rely heavily on the student's current knowledge of music in order to best serve them! If a student is learning the flute and how to read music at the same time, we will address both topics during our lesson time.

My teaching style is high-energy and enthusiastic. While some lessons will have a small "lecture" portion if we are learning about a specific music style, time period, or composer, lessons will be mostly made up of playing and instruction related to the skill at hand. I want students to become strong critical thinkers and confident musicians, so I use guided conversation and questions to help them find solutions to problems (i.e. "this section of the music is difficult to play--let's come up with some ways to make it easier!" or "what pieces of information should I look for to successfully sightread a piece of music?"). We sometimes include topic-appropriate games or listen to music from our favorite movies to help the student learn a concept. We work hard in lessons, but also have a lot of fun!

As noted under "Sources," we will occasionally reference YouTube videos, and some of those might be clips from popular movies. Teacher Carrie will always pre-screen videos to make sure that they are appropriate for the student (primarily the movies would be rated G or PG). If a student or parent would like to set limits on the rating of movies allowed (i.e. only G-rated movies, or only PG-rated movies, etc.) please send Teacher Carrie a message.
受講に必要なもの
🎶Students should bring their flute, a music stand, their music, and a pencil to every lesson.🎶

Students are expected to provide their own flute for private flute lessons.
If you need to acquire a flute, please contact your local music store or message Teacher Carrie for recommendations. It is ***NOT*** recommended that you purchase a flute from vendors such as Amazon, Walmart, or other stores that are not specialty music stores.
If the student has a flute that might be older (belonged to a family member or friend who previously played) and has not been serviced in a while, it is suggested that you contact your local music store (or message Teacher Carrie for repair technician suggestions) for an evaluation of the instrument and address any needed repairs. You can do this prior to or after the first private lesson.

Students will also need a music stand for at-home practicing (folding music stands can be an affordable--and easily portable--option), a metronome (free smartphone metronome apps are acceptable), cleaning rod/swab for their flute (new flutes come with a rod; a cleaning rod and swab can be purchased at any music store), a pencil with an eraser (no pens!).

To comply with copyright and fair use laws, students may be asked to purchase their own copy of a method book, etude book, or solo. Teacher Carrie will send details regarding necessary materials to the student and parent.
