**This is a new version of my other math course that meets 3 times a week. This version of the course meets once per week. I will be teaching this version all fall/winter.** This class will meet one time per week to explore fundamental Kindergarten math concepts. The content of each class will allow for consistent student participation and interaction. Students will be provided with engaging activities which allow them to explore the concepts learned in a hands-on way whenever possible. Each class will act as a stand-alone class but will follow the same schedule and format. We will always begin with students answering the question of the day. This is a fun way to take attendance and encourage participation from even the most reserved students. As students respond, we will learn how to properly display their answers and then analyze the results using important math vocabulary such as “most” and “least”. We will follow our question of the day by exploring number sense and numeration skills such as number recognition and counting with one-to-one correspondence up to 20, representing and showing numbers in different ways, as well as working with a number line. We will also practice extending and creating patterns. The second half of the class will be a mini-lesson focusing on one of three different math strands (Geometry, Number Sense, or Measurement). When learning about geometry, the focus will be on 2D or 3D shapes and their attributes. Number Sense mini-lessons will focus on addition or subtraction which is in addition to the number sense content we explore during each class. During our Measurement mini-lessons, topics will include length and height, measuring with non-standard units, mass (heavy/light), capacity, and temperature. During our mini-lessons, students will learn about each topic and apply the knowledge gained to help complete activities. We will end most classes with a fun whole group game relating to the concepts we learned. There will be frequent opportunities for active participation throughout the entire class! Here is a breakdown of the schedule for each class: - question of the day - display and analyze results - number recognition and counting with one-to-one correspondence (1-20) - number of the day (1-20) **the number of the day will increase by one each class** - represent the number of the day in different ways including tally marks, using a ten frame and a number line - mini-lesson (geometry, number sense, or measurement in rotation) - whole group game In addition to the class content, I will often provide extension activities or challenges for students to continue their learning at home. These activities will not be mandatory but will be available for extra practice of concepts that we are exploring in class. We meet once per week and students are welcome to join at any point as classes do not build upon each other. Students are asked to bring some basic supplies with them to each class including the printable page that I will provide the day before class, blank paper, pencil, and crayons. They will also need to bring a collection of 20 small items that they can use as counters to help with one-to-one correspondence, addition, and subtraction. This may include things like small toys, paper clips, Cheerios, cotton balls, etc. Occasionally, our lessons may require other household items, but I will always give notice. Please check the classroom for updates before class begins. If you do not have access to a printer, I will ask students to record answers on a blank sheet of paper or whiteboard instead. I hope to see you in my classroom soon! **if my section times do not work for you please feel free to send me a message requesting an alternate day or time. I will do my best to make something else work** All classes begin with number sense content followed by a mini-lesson. Mini-Lessons will be different each class, but the overall topics are as follows: Week 1: Mini-Lesson - Geometry, Number of the day- 3 Week 2: Mini-Lesson - Number Sense, Number of the day- 4 Week 3: Mini-Lesson - Measurement, Number of the day- 5 Week 4: Mini-Lesson - Geometry, Number of the day- 6 Week 5: Mini-Lesson - Number Sense, Number of the day- 7 Week 6: Mini-Lesson - Measurement, Number of the day- 8 Week 7: Mini-Lesson - Geometry, Number of the day- 9 Week 8: Mini-Lesson - Number Sense, Number of the day- 10 Week 9: Mini-Lesson - Measurement, Number of the day- 11 Week 10: Mini-Lesson - Geometry, Number of the day- 12 Week 11: Mini-Lesson - Number Sense, Number of the day- 13 Week 12: Mini-Lesson - Measurement, Number of the day- 14 Week 13: Mini-Lesson - Geometry, Number of the day- 15 Week 14: Mini-Lesson - Number Sense, Number of the day- 16 Week 15: Mini-Lesson - Measurement, Number of the day- 17 Week 16: Mini-Lesson - Geometry, Number of the day- 18 Week 17: Mini-Lesson - Number Sense, Number of the day- 19 Week 18: Mini-Lesson - Measurement, Number of the day- 20 Topics will continue to rotate in this order. I also have additional specialized qualifications in Reading and Primary Education and have taken numerous professional development courses focusing on literacy and mathematics. I also have my TESOL certification for teaching English. I consider myself to be a continuous and lifelong learner and am committed to embracing the challenge of professional growth in order to provide your child with the best possible learning experiences.
Over the past 8 years, I have been a classroom teacher and have taught many grades. I currently teach Literacy, Math, and Science to Junior and Senior Kindergarten students. I knew that I wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember and it is truly my passion. I strive to create innovative classes that keep my students engaged while learning at the same time. For the past 3 years, I have also been teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) to students through an online platform. I have taught thousands of ESL classes in person and online. I have taught English to students from all over the world including China, Peru, Mongolia, South Korea, Malaysia, Brazil, and Japan. It can be difficult for young children to learn through a computer screen, however, this experience has strengthened my ability to be an engaging teacher even while teaching virtually. I keep my students engaged by utilizing technology, incorporating movement when possible, making the content relatable, and learning through hands-on experiences.
I am a mother to a 3.5-year-old boy and an almost 1-year-old girl. As a parent, I know how important it is to feel informed when it comes to your child’s education. For this reason, I make open communication with parents and guardians a priority. Please feel comfortable contacting me, through the Outschool platform, if you have any questions or concerns about your child’s learning experience in my classes. I am passionate about embracing my students’ eagerness to learn and to enhance their growth as individuals. I encourage and welcome all learners in my classroom and would love to teach, have fun and learn with your child!
