Homeschool high school freshmen, sophomores and juniors should take this class to familiarize themselves with the college admission process. Carter, a homeschooling mother, college professor and homeschool guidance counselor with a post graduate certificate in “College Admissions” from Columbia University guides students in the process of college admission. Her experience, passion and practical help will give your child the edge in college admission. Parents are invited to the final session to ask questions along with their children. The workbook for the class is: Prepare for College!: A Complete Guide to the College Admission Process for Homeschoolers by Collegiate Learning The class discussion and interaction is vital to this class and thus at least six students must take the class in order for the class to be conducted. In this three (4) week class students will answer these questions: • What Do I Already Know About College? • What Do I Want to Do? • Do I Know What I Really Want to Study? • How Do I Decide Which Colleges Are Right for Me? • How Should I Create My College List? • How Do I Get Recommendations That Help Me Stand Out as a Candidate? • How Do I Write a Resume When I Have Little or No Job Experience? • How Can I Improve My SAT or ACT Score? • How Do I Fill Out the Common Application? • What Are My Admissions Options? • How Do I Prepare for the College Interview? • How Do I Become an Exceptional Candidate That Colleges Want? • How Do I Get Enough Money for College? • How Do I Approach the College Essay? The workbook for the class is Prepare for College!: A Complete Guide to the College Admission Process for Homeschoolers by Collegiate Learning Session 1; What do I already know about college? Exploring my options: What do I want to do in college? In this session students will discuss their ideas about the kind of college they want to attend and their admission options when applying for college. Session 1A Do I know what I really want to study? How do I decide which college I will attend? In this session, students will explore what they will major in and what kinds of college they are likely to apply to for admission, Session 2 How should I create my college list? How do I get recommendations that will matter to colleges? Students will create a reach, match and safety school list and create brag sheets for recommenders. Session 2A How do I write a resume when I have not worked much or have worked a lot or have a little job experience? How do I get a high score on the SAT or ACT exam? Students will focus on composing a resume and a plan to score higher on the Sat and Act Session 3 How do I fill out college applications, including the Common App? What are all my admission options? What should I do at a college fair? Students will focus on the college application process and online and live college fairs. Session 3A How do I prepare for a college admission interview? How to become an exceptional applicant such that colleges want me? Students will learn college interview skills and how to be an outstanding college candidate. Session 4 How do I get enough money to attend college and perhaps get a scholarship? When do I begin writing the college essay? Students will begin researching scholarships and planning their college admission essay. Session 4A What questions do I still have? What are the college terms I should know? Students will come to class with questions about their college plans and college terms will be reviewed.Parents may ask questions.
