When Emily Dickinson died in 1886, few knew that she spent her days writing poetry on scraps of paper and on the backs of envelopes. It wasn't until her family discovered more than 1,800 poems that the world took note of the reclusive Belle of Amherst. Today, she stands tall as a cultural icon. Who hasn't heard that "Success is counted sweetest/ By those who ne'er succeed" or pondered the question "I'm Nobody! Who are you? / Are you -- Nobody -- too?"? In this engaging one-time class, we will explore numerous Dickinson poems in an attempt to elucidate the life of the author and understand why she wrote, what she wrote, and why she remains so famous!

My passions are writing and poetry, and it's my great joy that my five kids can quote Shakespeare and Longfellow. So many students claim to "hate" poetry, but that's often because poetry is difficult to understand. My goal is to give students the tools they need to unlock poems. Like John Keats suddenly understanding Homer once he read the English translation, I want my students to look "...at each other with a wild surmise/ Silent, upon a peak in Darien."
