This one time class will introduce learners to the base 10 number system. I will teach them how to count and model numbers using the math manipulatives sheet that includes, ones, rods, and flats or more commonly known as ones, tens rods, and 100’s. They will learn to group by tens and count by tens using the manipulatives also. Example: We will practice showing the number 26 with manipulatives. I will also reverse this process and show them a model then have them write the number. This two way process is certain to lay a clear picture for them. We will also learn to make trades. For example, 10 ones can be traded for 1 rod. A thorough approach awaits these young learners. They will be highly engaged with hands on interactive practice. We will end each class with each student being given an opportunity to share what they learned in class through a question and answer activity with the teacher.

Learners will need a pencil and paper along with the math manipulatives sheet, which I will attach prior to class. Please print and cut the manipulatives prior to class. They are attached in the Learners section of the class description. This will save valuable time for all participants and allow us to begin active learning immediately. Thank you.

Hi Parents! Thank you for your interest in my classes. I offer a wide variety of classes within the life skills, language arts, math, and science content areas. My most popular classes are private math tutoring, shoe tying, introduction to writing and a variety of creative arts classes. These classes are designed for students in elementary through grade 6. I have been a teacher for over thirty years. I have taught students from many cultures and backgrounds. I have taught all content subjects in every elementary grade as well as 6th grade Language Arts. I have taught students on line, in public, parochial, homebound, after school, and in enrichment settings. To date, I have taught over 8,000 virtual on-line classes! I am a licensed teacher, administrator, instructional coach, and also have my academically gifted certification. I earned my masters in school administration from UNC-Chapel Hill, and a highly-qualified bachelors in K-6 from Elon College/University. In addition, I have an associates degree in Early Childhood Education. How we learn and the stages we move through are always taken into account when creating and delivering instruction. In my classroom, I use a wide variety of instructional strategies and research based methodologies to meet the individual learning styles and interests of my students. I use inquiry based learning and believe students learn best when their learning styles and interests are part of the classroom experience. Relationships are an essential part of a students success both in and out of the classroom. Building strong relationships with my students is at the core of my instructional approach. I am a lifelong learner and want to inspire my love for learning with all of my students, in hopes they will be too. Teaching is my passion but in my spare time, I enjoy reading, gardening, embroidery, spending time outdoors and being on the water. I am happiest when playing with my eight year old grandson Alex and our adorable dog Gracie. I hope you will check out my catalog of classes.
