Students in this class already have a strong understanding of writing a cohesive paragraph using complete sentences to express an idea or tell a story. These students may already be familiar with writing a narrative and using varied sentence structure to help their writing flow more smoothly. In this Persuasive Writing course, we will first define what persuasive writing is, and identify it’s various uses. Students will discover how to write persuasively, as well as who they can persuade. Students will brainstorm different persuasive writing topics. They will learn and practice planning, organizing, and structuring their persuasive writing pieces using graphic organizers and planning pages. By sharing my slideshow with the students on the screen, and using original worksheets designed for this course, I will teach, model, and practice the processes of brainstorming, planning, writing as a whole group, and writing independently. Students will learn through discussion, interactive activities, hands on learning, and plenty of structured and supportive writing practice. After planning, students will write drafts of their persuasive writing pieces, and then rewrite them in persuasive letter from. There will be plenty of practice and tons of review along the way as students build upon content we have learned. After mastering the basic art of persuasive writing technique, students will learn to write the parts of a letter. We will cover both friendly and formal letter writing, and discover the differences between the two in letter structure, language and form. Students will learn how to properly address an envelope, and be asked to mail a friendly letter to a family member or friend outside of the classroom. (Due to security measures, students are not permitted to share addresses or other personal information with each other or the teacher in the classroom.) After letter writing, we will touch on different forms of persuasive writing: Speeches Articles Advertisements Reviews Students will discover how persuasive writing tactics are used all around them through studying examples and practicing various forms. The course will culminate with a fun review game to reinforce the many skills the students learned during the course. Students will enjoy learning the art of persuasive writing, and adding these important tools and skills to their creative writing toolbox. More writing practice makes stronger and more proficient writers. Learning to write for different purposes gives students an opportunity to become better communicators, increases problem-solving skills, logical skills, creative thinking ability, and helps to develop personal voice. I look forward to working with your student!
