Learn to play the violin, fiddle, viola, or cello with correspondence-style lessons. 

Take ownership of your musical journey with lessons customized just for you. Beginners through advancing musicians can learn at their own speed and level with personalized, self-paced lessons.

Are you having trouble finding music lessons that work with your schedule? Learn anytime and anywhere with recorded lessons made specifically for you. You can add videos of your playing and receive feedback, encouragement, practice ideas, and next steps. Improve at your own place and pace.

Feeling camera-shy or nervous? You’ll find a supportive experience in this class. Appearing on camera and posting videos is always optional. You can choose to share as much or as little as you’d like. You can also choose to ask questions through written communication and Outschool messages. Learn in the way that works best for you.

This class is designed as a 9-week semester course so that all of your videos, replies, and learning materials are in one place, and in chronological order in the Outschool classroom. You can have fun tracking your progress and seeing your improvement as you share your practice in the Outschool classroom. 

For this class to work best, you should communicate with your teacher to share what instrument you want to learn, your playing level, and any musical goals or interests you want to work on. Your teacher will help guide you with resources and materials just right for your. You'll see new challenges as you improve. 

Here’s what you can expect in each 9-week session of this class. 

🎻 Survey & Check-In
Each week will start with a post asking you to check in and share your progress. You might do this through a video posted in the classroom or an Outschool message, or by typing your reply in a post. Your input will ensure your lessons are perfect for your level and goals. You can expect questions about your playing experience and goals. You can share songs you want to learn or skills you’d like to improve on. 

🎻 Focused Video Lesson(s)
Based on your input, you‘ll see at least one video lesson made specifically for you. You’ll learn skills to focus on, repertoire, and new songs to play along with. You can learn scales, sight-reading, and music theory too. You will learn through playing exercises and repertoire. The curriculum can include The Suzuki Method, Essential Elements, fiddle tunes, and songs you request or share. It’s like having a private lesson you can review as much as you want!

🎻 Skills Practice
You’ll spend each week practicing your new skills and songs. 

Example skills include: 
- holding the instrument and bow 
- playing in tune 
- bowing rhythms 
- creating a beautiful tone
- vibrato
- scales and arpeggios
- music theory and sight reading
- playing skills and passages specific to songs you want to learn

🎻 Interactions
There are lots of ways to interact in a self-paced class. You can choose to share your playing through videos in the Outschool classroom. Every time you do, you can expect a response with encouragement, feedback, and advice. You can also ask questions, share songs you want to learn, and ask for help with tricky passages or songs. Getting in touch every week means you will be able to reflect on your progress, ask questions, and set goals. You’ll also have a record of your progress as you go!

You can keep learning in future sessions too. Each 9-week session features new, customized content just for you. You’ll keep improving and moving forward with every semester-long class.

Before class begins, new learners should specify whether they will be learning the violin, fiddle, viola, cello, or a combination of instruments by replying to the welcome message or direct message to the teacher. Your teacher will be Chris Jones, Kimberly Testa, Zoe Kushubar, or Stacey Rae Sinclair. You may request your SRS Music & STEAM teacher through Outschool messages, or continue with the default teacher on the listing.

Violin, fiddle, viola, or cello in good playing condition. Pitch clip, tuner, or tuning app. Bow in good playing condition and rosin. Shoulder rest or sponge (violin or viola). Rock stop (cello). Music stand and music. (Student-requested repertoire or teacher will suggest curriculum and books to purchase after the first week of class.)

Stacey Rae Sinclair is a lifelong musician with the heart of a teacher. She is a certified teacher with a master's degree in education. Over her 15 years of teaching, she has taught private lessons, workshops, and camps. Stacey Rae Sinclair is a successful teacher on Outschool. Since September of 2020, she has been in good standing, with a 5-star rating. She founded Stacey Rae Sinclair Music (SRS Music) to help fill the consistent demand for 1:1 violin lessons, fiddle classes, and more. Her mission is to bring a love of learning and joy for music to all her learners.

Chris Jones is a lifelong musician and multi-instrumentalist. He began learning Suzuki Cello at 3 years old and picked up violin in grade school. After discovering an old mandolin in a closet, Chris fell in love with the instrument and learned bluegrass and folk music. From there, he went on to learn guitar, banjo, and piano as part of his continuing music studies. 

Chris earned his Doctorate in Music from West Virginia University. He has taught music as a visiting assistant professor at West Virginia Wesleyan College, teaching applied instrumental lessons in guitar, mandolin, banjo, bass, and fiddle. He also founded the West Virginia Wesleyan Appalachian ensemble and taught music theory, ear training, music history, and general education courses in music appreciation. Chris is a talented educator who makes learning music fun and accessible for students of all ages and skill levels. With his breadth of knowledge and expertise on several instruments, he is sure to be a great fit for your young musician.

Kimberly Testa has been a music educator for the past 3 decades. She holds several state teaching certificates, including Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New York. Her education includes a BM from the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam and a MA from Stony Brook University. Maintaining a focus on classical string and piano instruction, Kim’s primary instruments are violin, viola, and piano, as well as secondary instruments that include cello and acoustic upright string bass and voice.  
In the early 90s Kim started her teaching career in New York Public Schools.  During that time, Kim taught full-time, performed in a band and community orchestras regularly, adjudicated NYSSMA, LISFA, and SCMEA music festivals, and taught privately. After moving to Los Angeles, CA in 1999, Kim started her own private studio, catering to clients in the greater Los Angeles area. She also worked with a private music company that provided music instruction for private and public schools. Kim continued to study, teach and perform regularly until 2005 when she started a family. In 2010 Kim moved to the Boston, MA area. She continued to teach privately on violin, viola, cello, and piano, and joined the Wellesley Symphony Orchestra and several other performing groups. In 2016, Kim returned to the public school system and taught in both Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Now settled in Florida, she maintains a private music studio.

Zoe Kushubar is excited to serve as a violin teacher with SRS Music & STEAM. She has studied the violin for 19 years and has taught since 2017. She is proud of being an enthusiastic and supportive teacher. Zoe fosters flexibility and creativity in her lessons with students. Every student is different, so she adapts her teaching approach to best suit his/her/their needs. Zoe received undergraduate degrees in both Chemistry and Violin Performance from Converse University, and a Master of Music degree from Florida State University this year. Zoe is now working toward her Doctorate of Musical Arts at the University of Maryland. She has attended music intensives over the years including Aspen Music Festival, Brevard Music Center, Decoda Chamber Music Institute, and National Youth Orchestra 2. Her primary teachers include Lyn Acosta, Jennifer John, Sarah Johnson, Courtney LeBauer, Shannon Thomas, and David Salness. Zoe is the perfect teacher for beginners through advanced violinists.
