Conventions of writing allow writers to specify the exact way a word or phrase should be interpreted by the reader. They help the reader understand exactly what the writer had in mind. When you can't be there to read your writing to someone else, conventions can help do the reading for you. Students study authentic texts and come to recognize these “patterns of power”—the essential grammar conventions that readers and writers require to make meaning. My lessons introduce a way of thinking about grammar instruction and sets up everything you need to immerse yourself in the process of inviting elementary students to experiment and play with language. I always connect the teaching of conventions to craft and style, not just to memorize rules. My lessons offer teachers practical, classroom-ready advice to take their teaching of conventions to the next level. I incorcorate children's literature and PowerPoints.
