テスト
I engage in continuous informal assessment throughout the class, taking notes about what the learners already know and what mini-lessons need to be embedded into future sessions. The games and puzzles learners engage in during each session serve as informal assessment measures, as well.

このクラスで学べること

Join me (Dr. Karen Wieland) for an ongoing weekly "game night' to extend knowledge of early-intermediate Latin vocabulary and grammar through shared reading of topical dialogues followed by collaborative online study games on Quizlet as well as collaborative study activities such as bingo games, crossword puzzles, and word hunts.

Weekly study games and activities will be designed around the cpnversational vocabulary topics in John C. Traupman's textbook, Conversational Latin for Oral Proficiency, Fourth Edition (see Supply List for order information). It is strongly recommended that learners obtain their own copies of the book. [Outschoolers have have taken my Introduction to Latin Courses VII-IX already have the title in their libraries.]

NOTE: Learners enrolling in this class should have achieved an early-intermediate level of Latin proficiency, equivalent to two full academic years of middle-school study or one full academic year of high-school study. The class might be suitable for learners outside of the stated age range. Please contact me to discuss this.

I am a dedicated and creative literacy specialist with 20+ years experience working with students of all ages. In addition to teaching a nine-level Introduction to Latin course series on Outschool, I also teach another popular series of courses on Outschool called Vocabulary Building with Roots and Affixes, which extends through six levels so far. As a language buff, I’ve studied Italian, Latin, German, and (to a lesser extent) French and Spanish.

I hold permanent certification from New York State in Reading (grades K-12). I am also a certified Wilson Reading System dyslexia practitioner. I have extensive experience with Orton-Gow methods for literacy re/mediation; the foundation for that work was the introductory training I received through the Gow Teacher Training Institute. I taught Orton-Gow (Reconstructive Language) at the Gow School and the Gow School Summer Program for several years. Across more than a decade as a teacher educator and university reading center director, I helped to prepare several hundred reading teachers and literacy specialists in NY and PA.

I completed my undergraduate degree at The Catholic University of America School of Music. My doctoral and master’s degrees were earned at the University at Buffalo School of Education, under the advisement of Dr. Michael W. Kibby, a nationally known literacy diagnostician and scholar. I have presented my research at several national and international conferences, including Literacy Research Association, International Reading Association, and International Dyslexia Association.
