Mythology & Vocabulary is a fun, cross-curricular club designed to help students build lasting academic vocabulary through the stories of ancient Greece and Rome. Each week features a new mythological character or tale—like Narcissus, Chronos, or Pandora—paired with high-frequency SAT words that share Greek or Latin roots. Students will explore the meanings and origins of these words, analyze how they connect to the myth, and practice using them through creative writing and vocabulary-based activities. This is a highly interactive club where learners grow as readers, writers, and thinkers. They’ll engage in guided discussions, word-building challenges, and writing prompts that make vocabulary study both meaningful and memorable. Students can enroll at any time. Each session stands alone and features new myths, new roots, and new words to explore. Weekly Class Flow: • Welcome & Warm-Up (5 min): Intro and preview • Story Time (15–20 min): Read or summarize a Greek or Roman myth • Root Word Breakdown (15 min): Explore 6–10 high-frequency SAT words with shared roots (e.g., chrono, phobia, bene, dict) • Creative Application (10–15 min): Short writing prompt using the week’s vocabulary in a myth-inspired scene • Review & Wrap-Up (5 min): Vocabulary games or rapid-fire review Examples of Weekly Themes: In this ongoing club, each session focuses on a different mythological figure and related vocabulary roots: • "Prometheus: Bringer of Fire and Foresight" introduces the roots pre and meta, with words like prelude, predict, and metaphor. • "The Myth of Narcissus" highlights the roots narc and ego, with vocabulary such as narcissist and egotistical. • "Pandora's Box" brings in pan and don, leading to words like pandemic, donation, and donor. • "Chronos and the Flow of Time" focus on the roots chron and temp, with examples like chronology, tempo, and temporary. • "Hermes: Messenger of the Gods" explores tele, graph, and dict, introducing words like telephone, dictate, and telegraph. • "The Curse of Medusa" examines the roots phob and terr, featuring words such as phobia, terrified, and terrific. • "Athena: Goddess of Wisdon and War" includes soph and log, with vocabulary like philosophy, logic, and apology. • "Hades and the Realm of the Dead" centers on mort and nec, teaching words such as mortal, necropolis, and morbid.
